Dealership Clutch Install
Here's the deal. Today I spent an hour or more searching down the annoying sound my car has been making. I finally traced it to the tranny. According to the Haynes manual it is either the input gear bearing or the clutch release bearing.
My car is a 98 GSR and it rolled over 53K miles today so I'm thinking the throwout bearing and clutch are overdue for replacement anyway.
Here's my question(s):
If I go to the dealership how much can I expect to pay? I'm going to request an ITR clutch/pressure plate and have them lighten the flywheel when the machine shop resurfaces it. If there is still a problem I have an extended warranty and everything in the tranny that isn't new will be covered. Does this seem wise?
I would really like to do the clutch replacement myself with a Exedy organic but I don't have some of the tools, a place to work, time to wait for a clutch to be shipped in, and the flywheel resurfaced.

to my understanding the clutch and such parts arent covered under wear (which is what this would be) that would be like someone that cant drive a 5 speed burning up the clutch and the dealership replacing it. correct me if i'm wrong
I'm talking about PAYING for the clutch replacement at the dealership and if there is something actually wrong in the tranny then THAT would would be covered. I know warranties don't cover clutch abuse/failure.
I'm sorry I wasn't more clear about that.

At both my dealers here in Phoenix,
I was quoted $975!!! to do the clutch, pressure plate, T/O bearing
I just about **** my pants....I have NO idea why the price is so high....
my SE-R was only 600 bucks
Peace

the clutch install doesn't require any special tools except a torque wrench, its semi easy to get the tranny out but it's a real pain getting it back in......and that's just watching someone do it...haven't done one myself yet but the actual concept seems pretty easy, its only four small bolts for the pressure plate its just the pain of removing everything and handling that heavy *** tranny....975, whoa......glad i have friends that can do that.....

um its 6 bolts for the pressure plate on a type-r. Second gen tegs even had more bolts. Plus there is alot of other stuff that has to be removed. Its a good 4 hour job if your by yourself. Half that or less with help.
975!
Anyone else been quoted this? Unless I'm wrong honda sets the labor charge for repairs so that will be the same everwhere, unless the dealerships there really stick it to you on the parts this would probably be the same almost anywhere.
Looks like I'm dropping my tranny tomorrow, then Monday taking the flywheel to a machine shop and calling *** Import.

yea, i'm sorry iwas wrong, theres six bolts on the regular teg also, sorry, couldn't really remember..........and i have never been quoted 975 cause i wouldn't let the dealership put my clutch in for the shear fact of 975 is ridiculous....good thing my friends a honda tech and does that **** for 100 bucks........
I got my clutch replaced this past summer. I paid 500 for everything needed plus the install but a friend of mine works at the place I had it done at. But he said that regular price is usually around 300-350 for installation on top of whatever you have to pay for parts.
be very careful about that noise...
I had a noise from the tranny, it wound up to be the tranny.
(no pun intended)
pressure plate, release bearing & clutch disk were all ruined due to a failed input shaft bearing on the transmission. (pilot bearing & bad oil were the culprits)
I was lucky cause I found a tranny at the junk yard for only $350While you are down there, change everything.

Thanks for the advice!
Thats why I'm not driving the car since I tracked down the sound. I'm replacing all the parts I'm not covered for and if it still makes the noise my exteneded warranty buys me a new tranny.
I called around and found a shop that would do it for around 300 bucks labor.
I'm probably going to go with an Exedy Oraganic or OEM ITR.
Thanks again!

Also, dont bother with the ITR clutch, its like $300 and an aftermarket one is only about 350-400. IMO its worth it to get an aftermarket one, considering i went through an ITR clutch in my GSR in about 25k miles. I have an ACT now and no problems plus, it grabs way better than any OEM clutch. Just my $.02.
EH-D, I seem to have the exact same problem as yours. A low whining sound at idle when I'm in neutral. I,m very interested in finding out what's the real problem and what has to be changed to fix it. Also, I hear a noise when I engage the clutch in first (when I don't give any gas before engaging) and sometimes at low speeds in second gear... Do you hear this noise also?
So keep us posted!
I hope it's not the input shaft bearing in the transmission!!! Seems pretty expensive.
Thanks

I hope it's the clutch release bearing, I started the car today and I could hear it pretty much right away. 53,035 miles on the clock, hopefully it just wore out from the previous owner not shifting into nuetral at long stops. I'll keep you posted.
If it is a bearing in the tranny I'm going to be very thankful for my extended warranty, becuase I'm replacing every part thats not covered.

Ok, finally got the clutch sorted out, I pickup the car tomorrow.
The guy at the shop was unable to get either of the aftermarket clutches I wanted, ACT and Exedy are on backorder for their kits. He did offer to sell me a ceremetalic racing disc for cost but I want something that would last upward of 30,000 miles.
Honda came through with an ITR clutch and pressure plate same day so I decided to settle on that. I would have prefered to get an aftermarked clutch but since I'm probably not going to be pushing more than 200 at the crank any time soon I'm happy with that.
By the way cost on a racing clutch is way cheaper than I thought. But I'm not telling.
