"Rocking the pedal", pulse generators, rod size, and TIG techniques. 56k go away
From what I know Rocking the pedal is.... rocking into the pedal adding rod then backing out...move over...roll into the pedal add rod...back out...move over..rock into the pedal. Is this correct? I've done this before, but never knew that was rocking the pedal. Anyone have anything to say about this? Does anyone here use this technique?
Pulse generators(not sure if thats the correct terminology) but I talked with one of my friends and he said that the new welders come with a adjustable pulse. so that you just have to keep your hand steady and in a straight line and the pulse creates the bead when you add rod. (I think ive experienced this with a Hobart 300amp h2o cooled welder) It really fucked up my aluminum welds because I dont do the whole straight line weld. (I go up, down, add rod, up, down, add rod, all the way across,...i actually add the rod as I begin to go up on the weld)
What size rod are you guys using to weld 40 schedule pipe? I have some tiny *** 1/16 rod....I think I should get some 1/8" stainless rod and try it out. I weld on 16 gauge a lot too...and the 1/16 rod seems to work just fine.
Also...what kind of welding technique do YOU use? I dont want to do cross stitch or walking the cup(however i do use walking the cup on aluminum...didn't know it was called that til last night) I just want a nice stack of dimes.
Here are some of the welds I've done... all of them non-purged, so hopefully after i get that set up there will be a difference in the weld quality and appearance.

here's my biggest issue....40 schedule

and one aluminum weld for good measure

THe pulser isn't a generator.
I'd reccomend 3/32 wire for schedule 40 pipe, but it's not a rule...just my preference.
Rocking the pedal is an absolute NO NO!!! I have been welding for a living for man years and have not yet seen a professional welder pump a pedal to make a weld. That outta tell you something... it's a half-*** technique that simply is the result of a person trying to simulate a weld appearance they have seen made by other means.

cool, I dont rock the pedal, just wondering if its better :-P guess not
Engloid what do you see is the problem with my welds...besides purging? Whats holding me back from doing a great job?

You could have saved a ton of work by buying a Donut! 3" or 4" whatever it is....
Thats my tip...lol

I didnt say it didnt look great....but it can also affect the integrity over a period of time....cuts are pretty close to one another...lots of molecular structure changes of the Stainless if not in the perfect environment....this is less prone in Aluminum....

For welding pipe, check out the threads mentioning walking the cup. It really can't be beat for pipe welding.
Also, it looks like you're getting the pipe pretty hot, or going to slow. In other words, speed up or turn the machine down a little bit. The dark color is indicative of a problem with overall heat input being too high, or bad gas coverage.

The rocking the pedal deal...I also have been welding for a long time and I never
have done or seen anyone rock the pedal until about four years ago one of my best friends was doing that with the pedal and I said ,What the hell are you doing?
He told me all the race car builders (good ones) did it.And I have been doing it when ever I need to,ever since The guy that showed me used to worked at R.J.s and built Warren and Kurt Johnson's cars A couple years ago.And just built the Skunk 2car at Phil Mandella's shop.So I don't have to say he's pretty good.

RMF, since you didn't see this method for so many years, I'm sure you agree that it is absolutely not necessary and that a weld can be made just as good otherwise. In fact, I doubt that you will find the best welders in the world welding up race car frames....no matter what method they use.
Nobody said it can't be done...but as I have said many times... it's like the "hunt and peck" typing... people only do it because they can't type properly. This SEVERELY limits their potential to improve. Ever seen somebody hunt and peck at 70words per minute??
So they guys welds look good. Fine. A person can hunt and peck and make very few errors, but the person that can type properly at 70wpm can correct their mistakes and still come out twice as fast in the end.
The welder that welds well without pumping the pedal doesn't necessarily make any more mistakes than the guy that does....so fixing mistakes isn't really an issue, as it may be in typing, where the speed can be reduced so slow that errors can be 100% eleminated.
Another analogy...training wheels will virtually eleminate wrecking around corners...as long as you're going slow as hell. There's no way a person on training wheels can go around turns like the person without.
In short, if somebody wants to come show me that they can pump the pedal and weld up a piece of pipe, make it look as good as mine, in less time, and do these things consistently, I've got $1000 cash waiting.

Exactly my point. He had to go over it twice, just because he couldn't make it look as good as he wanted to on the FIRST time around. Therefore, if he learned and mastered the correct technique, he'd likely do this job in half the time.

.. ive heard form many aswell that a welder that rocks isnt worth **** ..
i started out doing it like that but with advice and input on how this is not the right way to get the dimes and apperance of the weld ive stoped, and am just practicing on how to do it correctly .rocking is a cheap /short cut to doing it the right way ..
engloid how is the correct methods and movements on how to create a visualy appealing and penitrating weld?
i still cant seem to get it donw .. but im doing is using the filler go get the dimes/ripples with each dab should create the dime . also i have been moving the torch in circles and at the end of the circle i dip O< arrow shows were i dip to puddle location . other threads u state that moving the torch is also not recomended .
maybe u could set things straigh b/c u are more knowlageable then all of us . and i would just like to start off welding correctly from the get go and not get bad habbits .

dude chill .. i wasnt personally attacking u .. im just stating that welding like that is not the right way .. and that im trying to get into the habbit of doing it right ..
going over a weld by rocking to get the look just takes longer .. i whant to get it right in one pass .. by getting the ripples by dipping the filler .. not rocking the pedal .. and its a bit harder this way to get the look .. but its the correct way to do it ..
post your pics .. good luck .. b/c its a lill harder this way .

There's not just one way to do it. Personally, I prefer to use a steady torch speed and dab wire in a rhythm, such that the wire addition to the puddle is what makes the ripples. Stainless is not always really easy to do this with, as the puddle will sometimes like to wander. Therefore, I will often leave the wire in the puddle and either walk the cup or simulate it by using a zig zag pattern and burn it down as I go.

Are you welding race car frames now? Maybe you're pissed off because I said that the best welders in the world don't make a living welding race car frames. Also consider how much money the average person makes welding these frames. There's a shop here that makes late model dirt track frames...and they pay $10/hr...if you're "really good." I think that a really good welder is not going to work for that much money. Sure, maybe if you get on a nascar team and have a nice fat salary check, you may make good money welding the frames...but you're going to be doing a lot more than welding...and those jobs aren't common.

Is this whining going to start up again? We've seen nothing but talk from you and you seem to keep getting upset with everything I say, and want to argue with me constantly. Why do you want to insist on arguing this point, when you just admitted that you just recently saw somebody rock the pedal, but you've been welding for years? Do you really think this is some sort of new technological craze that's going to take over the welding industry?

So, the best welders in the world work on race car frames and have to weld something twice to make it look good? And that these are the guys we should consider mentors in the trade and try to mimic their behavior? Is this what you're saying, or are you really saying anything useful at all? I think you're not.
Why do you insist on being a dick about anything I say? Please take your childish antics elsewhere.

There is a huge difference between someone that is able to weld and someone that is a welder.
Same goes with a lot of professions. Just because you are able to make computer programs doesnt make you a computer programmer.
What im trying to get at is with someone fabbing a chasis of any sorts, they have the ability to do the math involved and get the frame welded together. Take that same person that is able to weld, and maybe even to weld moderately well, and throw them in a situation where you are doing welds that have to be of a super high standard, they may not fair too well. The same goes for a professional welder. They may be able to lay great welds down, but fabricating the various parts and figuring certain parts of the mathematics and theory they would not fair as well.
Your perspectives are entirely different. Engloid is speaking from a professional welders prospective saying "this is the way things should be done" and you are taking the perspective "this works, it still looks nice, and doesnt fail." Understand each of your perspectives and take what engloid has to say as the ideal and adapt what he is saying the best you cant. He is a wealth of knowledge and is just trying to point out things that are known to be wrong.

So you saw somebody weld one and now you're the resident expert? Just because you know somebody that does something, it doesn't mean it's the proper or best thing to do.
I don't give a **** how they build race car frames. Pumping the pedal is not the best way to weld ANYTHING!!!
Would you please stay out of these discussions until you want to be helpful or say something productive?
