Default Changing final gears for crx trannies.

wassup guys,

I have a 91 crx si tranny, but the synchroes are housed. I also have a 89 dx tranny that is absolutely perfect in my old crx. I have the dx tranny on 90-91 flywheel and clutch, and I am assuming all the parts are the interchangeable.

I would like to know how to swap the final gears on these trannies. I have a phantom grip in the dx tranny, but I have been told that the diff has to swap with the final gear. I put the phantom grip in the dx tranny, so I know I can swap the final gears. My friends brother also has experience with dissambeling trannies, and he could help me if i bug him enough.

All help is appreciated.

-Mark

A final drive consists of a ring gear mounted on the differential [sometimes interchangeable without having to also swap diffs] and the countershaft. You'll have to completely break down the countershaft and swap all gears/bearings/collars over. As far as whether or not the combination you want to do is feasible or not...I don't know. Personally I'd disassemble the two trannies side by side to find out.

If you're replacing synchros, Gear-Speed has carbon synchros for about $200/set.

take the countershaft and ring gear out of the Si and install it in the DX - you will then have Si transmission - you don't need to remove the Phantom Grip from the differential, just use the DX differential with the Si ring gear, which unbolts from the differential (bolts are left hand thread) and use the DX case - you will need to remove all of the gears from the DX countershaft and install them on the Si countershaft - you won't need to do anything to the mainshaft

those carbon synchros sound cool. where could i get that?

thanks for the help you guys.

I havent taken apart the trannies yet, but couldnt I just swap the whole shaft you guys are talking about? the dx/si tranny are supposed to be exactly the same except for the final gear. the years shouldnt matter since i have a 91 flywheel/clutch on my 89 tranny.

http://www.gear-speed.com has the carbon synchros.

If the gears and spacing are EXACTLY the same, then yes you can swap them...but tearing down the shafts isn't that hard if you're organized about it. The diametral pitch of the gear/pinion set must be the same for the gears to mesh.

Have you ever removed the final gear/ring gear combo from a dx/si tranny? My friend believes it can not be done, and I just want to verify. he was the one who put the phantom grip in the diff originally.

your friend is wrong - done it many times, converting ZC to ZC/Si hybrid (ZC with Si final drive) - as i stated before - use the Si countershaft (the final drive is part of the shaft) and ring gear (ring gear bolts that attach it to differential are left hand thread) - i would use all of the DX gears (yes, the Si are the same) on the countershaft since they have been meshing with the gears on the DX mainshaft - be careful when removing the bearings, gears, etc. from the countershaft and keep them in order so they go back in the right way - when you get down to the 1st - 2nd synchros, be sure to keep the synchro hub and sleeve together (don't separate them) - the sleeve is the piece around the outside of the hub with a groove in it that the shift fork rides in - they will only go together right in a certain way - if you are not familiar with this transmission, you can get this wrong, put it together and find out something isn't right
