two 10" subs or a single 12?
Well since my amp is weak (pyramid), is it better to get a single 12" Sony Xplode sub or get a pair of 10" JL subs? Both cost about the same.
If I upgrade the speakers instead of getting subs, and use the amp to power the speakers, would that sound better than if I use it to power the subs? The amp is only gonna cost me 60CDN.... very good deal imo, so I'm not thinking about getting a more expensive amp at this moment.

I was in your situation because my amp was "weak." I got a Xplod 12" and then swtiched to a Xplod 8", hoping to get better response.
Well, no. The only thing I got was more trunk space. In fact the 8" actually put out less because the surface area of the cone is less. The specs said, it's perfect, but your ears will tell you other wise.
Therefore, I would recommend a single 10" sub instead. A single 10" sub, if fed well, will bump. Check out the Xplod 10."
One last note, if you got a weak amp, it will not offer ground pounding bass no matter what. Just make sure your expectations are reasonable.

First off throw that POS amp away. pryamid makes the shitty equipment.
Look into a good amp. JBL's are very good amps and pretty cheap.
Get a pair is JL 10's. JL's will rape the Sonys. JL will go lower, sound better, and get louder(SPL).

get the jl's and throw that pyramid in the trash
pyramid is like the official pawn shop brand you can do better than that
i bought a shitty amp for my first system... it sounded bad and blew up 2 months later. save your money and get good stuff the first time

I like the sound of a single 12"
I'm running a Zapco AG200 amp bridged onto 1 Alpine Type-R 12 and I think it sounds awesome.
It's as loud as my friends 15 with an earthquake 500Watt amp. (which also kick's ***) I think it's his sub that's really holding him back though.

2 10's WILL be louder than 1 12. its a simple matter of surface area. ive had 2 10's, 2 12's, and 1 12. sound quality however is really subjective (i cant tell you what to get) and imho more important than loudness.

I'm a fan of the single 12". Easier to tune for low frequencies, less power required, less space required . . . Still get's louder than I'd ever need.
Of course, it's all dependent on the driver's you've got available to you. If the JL's you're talking about cost the same as a single Sony, they're probably the 10w0's, which are decent drivers, and pretty efficient. I'd take them over an Xplod.
If you're looking for a better amp on a budget, they do exist. I've had good luck with Profile's stuff - reliable, and their output doesn't seem to be too overrated. I picked up a 75X4 (105@2ohms) Clarus for like $130 on Ubid.

I prefer the single 12'' as well. My first basic setup had 2 phoenix gold amps. The 2-channel phoenix gold was supporting the sub and the other amp was giving power to boston acoustics rx series. The first sub was a JBL but after a few cracks I went with the Polk Audio pro series. The 12" in a sealed box (has to be custom made) made any tune sound too real.
ok, i had a pyramid 1500 watt amp as backup amp cuz my alpine got ed up. i has it powering 2 12" MTX thunder 5000s. they didnt even come on. the pyramid amps are soooooo missrated thats its unbelieveable. all they are good for is a coaster. about the subs, it doesnt really matter the size of the speaker. its the type of box u have really. 2 10"s in a sealed box would hit hard and sound very tight with a good amp. but a single 12" in bandpass box would prolly be exactly the same. but take up less room. if u wanna keep the pyramid, i would recommend going to radio shack and getting a couple of thier brand subs, cuz they are about the same quality as pyramid.
