Default am i low on tranny fluid?

when to go start the car this mourning and i notice that i couldnt get into 1st gear. i would have to put it into 2nd and then it would go. after the car was warmed up then that wasnt an issue anymore. when i shut the car off i tried playing with the gears and again it did not let me go into 1st without going to 2nd. this never happened before . what do u guys think?

Unscrew the bolt in the tranny and stick your finger in the fill-hole. The fluid should be level with the edge of the hole.

Doubt it. I mean, you COULD be low, but I don't think that's a symptom of it. Fresh fluid seems to make my synchros happy, so maybe some new fluid would help if your fluid is 15K miles old.

Also, cold makes a difference in the tranny/shifting behavior.

Sounds typical of a cold Honda transmission.

When it's "really" cold, my shifter barely moves.

Yeah, don't worry about it. Could be a sign of wear on the 1st gear synchro but what are you really gonna do about it?

just to confirm, wouldn't changing your fluid more frequently than the suggested 30k intervals allow the syncros to be less vulnerable? i do mine every 15k because it's so easy.

I thought there was no first gear synchro.

I thought there was one synchro on first.... none on reverse...

Other cars have no synchro on first, but I think Hondas do.

Many use OEM (good enough).
Some use GM Synchromesh (arguably better).
Others use Royal Purple, Redline, Motul, blah. This argument has been beaten to death, you might want to search it.
