Where did you hear about the better synchros? I figured they would be of OEM nature...

yeah the synchros are just oem...its just a 98 spec tranny built by Spoon which makes you feel better when buying it..lol...but i love mine and will really love it when i put a ats 4.92 in it...plus buying this new compared to a new usdm tranny is a no brainer.

yeah i dont need the 4.929 though because i do tons of highway drive and according to autocrossing.com i will already be at about 4200rpm @ 70mph with the itr jdm with the 4.785, if i went with the 4.929 in my gsr tranny i would be at 4100rpm @ 70mph...can you say 25mpg on the highway, oh well, at least this way i get any lsd...only paying 800 for the jdm tranny as i have sold the gsr one for 800 so i guess thats good....800 for ats or 800 for jdm and lsd...i prefer the latter

No such thing as a Spoon Tranny, They only sell the 96 or 98 Spec ITR Trannys Nothing done to them, Bought from Honda and sold by Spoon, It happens to be cheaper to get the tranny from Spoon than direct from Honda.

Jack is Correct the 4th and 5th Gears are the same as a USDM GSR, the 1-3 gears are the same as a USDM ITR and it has an ITR LSD and 4.785 FD.

I Love Mine

Some things in this world are not in balance. This is one of them. The other one that is odd is that GSR parts sometimes cost more than type R parts.

Well the reasoning behind it is this, Spoon Buys in such Large Volume, and I mean Large, (It also helps that They Only Race Hondas and have a close relationship too) that they get better prices than most dealers even do from Honda, So they can pass the savings along.

So what you guys are saying is that SPOON only resells STOCK Honda trannies? they don't do ANYTHING to them? One would think that they would use different gears, or perhaps their 4.86 final drive? I don't get it. SPOON makes a 4.86 FD, but they don't even put it in their own trannies? Someone PLEASE clarify here. What about the gears? Same as JDM ITR for SURE? How do you guys know this for SURE. Another thing - would SPOON not custom-build a tranny if you asked them to? Like if I were ordering a SPOON tranny, could I have them fortify it with the 4.86FD, different LSD (SPOON has an LSD too, right?) and "better" syncros or whatever?

So really if someone has a SPOON tranny they aren't any better than the '98 Spec JDM ITR trannies?

Funniest thing is that someone who buys one probably thinks they've got some bomb-*** "special" tranny or something because it's "SPOON." Don't get me wrong, the '98 spec JDM tranny is nice, but I can just see people going nuts over "that guy with the SPOON tranny..." and such. SPOON gets a LOT of crazy hype even if it's really not the BEST possible part available.

If I were in need of another tranny I'd just find a USDM and pop in another ATS 4.929 FD.

Yeah, Im sure, asked them, asked A&J, and also have the tranny in my car. They never claim it to be anything special, that is people that "think" that it must have special parts.

No Idea, I dont think it would be any cheaper than buying the FD and installing the FD at a local shop, as the Tranny is already together so Spoon would have to take it apart and reassemble it. What "better" Synchros are you reffering to?

Whoever would buy the tranny and not even ask whats in it would have to be an idiot, (Hope Im not offending anyone) that would be like buying an engine and not knowing anything about it except that its an engine. You would at least ask whats done to it, what model it is etc.

Whoa, slow down a bit. As Mike stated above, the tranny sold by Spoon is a 98 spec ITR tranny. From my understanding, the 96 spec is no longer offered(same as US anyway). If you wish, you can order their custom gear set:
2.533, 1.944, 1.591, 1.280, 1.033
or their FD 4.643 or 4.857
USDM Tranny ~ $1750 + $450 (JDM Final + Install Time) ~ $2200 (more if you have someone else install the FD)
98 Spec Tranny Through Spoon ~ $21xx Ready to install
I think that most people buying the tranny realize that they are not getting something "magical" from Spoon, rather just a std JDM part that we happen to source from Spoon.

I was speaking in hypotheticals. I would not buy a SPOON tranny anyways, so don't think I'm asking these questions because i want a SPOON tranny.

I just found it hard to believe that SPOON would make final drives, gearsets, cross-gears, etc. and NOT throw these parts in their "SPOON" trannies.

I NEVER said that there ever was anything such as "better" syncros - that's why I put it in quotes, as though I was skeptical about them too.

So, Dave says that SPOON makes a fully built tranny from them complete with the SPOON parts that you want in them. I wonder how much that would cost? I don't wonder for my sake, but just out of the sake of curiosity and to just know. Who can give me the info to find out how much a custom-built SPOON tranny would be?

Thanks for the input...

Prolly like 5 G's.. because they would start w/ a new tranny and I highly doubt they would give you credit on the new OEM parts that came out of the transmission.

Just get a 4.929 in the stock R gearbox.

Well, having them "build" you one, would not be cheap, but FYI:

Cross Gear Set 240,000 Yen
Final Drives 90,000 Yen
These are list prices AT Spoon IN Japan, so US pricing will vary.
Bang for the buck, ATS 4.929!
