I have 16 inch rims, but you can recalculate to 17 inch.
205/50R16 -> OK, no problems
205/55R16 -> rear wheel scratches plastic protector, when rear wheels are turned to max, and you put 4 persons to the car, not good.
But it is all for an european lude with stock suspension, which seems to be a bit lower than usdm one.

215/40/17 here, with a good offset (+36) and lowered (Eibach Pro Kit) everything is fine with my 4WS 
They only touch when compressed to the max, a condition i only went to on a race track (and once)...
