Default Well, Another Mystery Solved

I've been trying to figure out how the hell the bottom of my muffler got ground flat at the ARRC (it was a round Dynomax at one point, now its kind of D shaped). I had given up and reluctantly just chalked it up to a high speed trip through the gravel trap because I just couldn't come up with any better ideas.

Then I ran across this picture...

Ding ding ding ding... Winner!
I'm slowly grinding my muffler down on the exit curbing at turn 5. Pretty cool huh?

Scott, who says thats the fast way through there and dynomax mufflers are cheap, so fugg it.

You can't hear a scraping noise as you go over that?

Hittin' #5 as hard as you can and using ALL of the exit is probably worth 1/2 sec!

Keep grindin'!

Its pretty loud with a car with a really loud exhaust and the tire noises going over the groves in the curbing.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you've never been in a fully built race car.

Ear Plugs
Tire Noise

No, you can't hear something barely scraping a curb. There'd be more of a chance of feeling it, but its kind of bumpy and violent in that spot, so that wasn't happening either.
Now that I know its happening, I'll probably be able to feel it next time.

+1 - definately faster.

I still have the same exhaust on my old '85 ITC Civic that fell off and I ran over with the back right tire at Gingerman a couple years ago. Use to be round indeed....

I fabed up a nice little skid plate in the front of my ITA Integra around the header downpipe to keep it from hitting. Works pretty good - skid plate's scratched to hell but header looks new.

I am thinking about doing this because my new 4-1 header is a good bit below the oil pan. (My oil pan is ALL scratched up). I assume this is IT legal?

SPiFF, who fears the rule ***** in IT.

I can't see how it's not. It's just a hunk of metal bolted into the 3 bolt holes under the front subframe where the tying member is that bolts between the front and rear subframes. Nothing altered, no new holes or anything, stock bolts into stock bolt holes. If it wasn't there, I would've banged up a real nice header a couple times now. (ITA Integra btw)

I don't see how it could be illegal, and I would never protest anyone for something like that, but if it was deemed illegal somehow, just make a bracket that only touches the exhaust, and absorbes the blows from the road with a rubber bushing. That would then be considered a part of the exhaust system and immune from IIDSYCYC nitpicking.

It might not be technically legal, but I don't see anyone protesting it.
But Bowies idear is a good one to solve that concern.

My header appears to be clear, as there isn't a scratch on it. But my exhaust isn't completely optimized as far as being tucked up under the car is concerned (thrown together by the only exhaust guy here in town that would work on a car without a cat converter on it and it isn't very good work) and appears to be scraping in a couple of places.

If I get a little bit better exhaust fabbed up and move my turn 5 exit line about a foot to the right I'll probably solve the problem.

Yup. Make it part of the exhaust. The first e30 ITS BMW on the West coast found to be illegal because it had a skid plate.

Kind of looks like you you weren't tracking out quite far enough to me.

I wont disagree. I went back and looked at some video from the enduro and there's some space out there I'm not using.
Future adjustments are planned.

I'll take whatever excuses will work. Thats about as fast as I can go in turn 5, assign whatever reason you want to it.
I think if you (Jinx) had been able to hold the lead pack draft, you would have been up front the whole race. I'm pretty sure thats what happened to Vesa... He got snookered behind some slower ITB cars and lost the draft... Game over.

Scott, who learned some Talladega style drafting lessons during the ARRC. In ITC 2 Hondas are significantly faster than 1 and it takes 3 Hondas to be as fast as 1 Scirocco (seriously).

That is what it looked like spectating. You guys were tooth and nail that entire race. We had our money on Chuck in the ****-rocket, just because of the power advantage. I really felt like when it came down to the last lap and it was every man for himself, he could have motored just enough on the back straight to be uncatchable in 10a and b.

That was perhaps the most I have ever enjoyed watching a race, I'll tell you that much for sure. And CLEAN racing, at that!

I promise that it was head and shoulders above any race I've ever been in. If it was 1/2 as much fun to watch as it was to drive in, I can see how you enjoyed it.

As for the drafting, Once Chuck got up front it didn't take long for Will, Gareth and I to realize we'd have to work together or he would check out on us. We started freight training the back straight so we wouldn't lose him, and it still took all 3 of us working together to keep him within striking distance.
If they ever figure out how to make that **** rocket finish a race, I don't think anybody can beat it. Currently it just continues to beat itself.

Scott, looking forward to doing it all over again in 2005.

I usually just hate watching racing....I always want to be out there. For that race, I forgot to do that.

Between your battle and checking spilts to see if the Audi that spun at the start could catch back up to the leaders of B it was tons of fun. If I could have just had a beer in my hand I would have been happy.
