Default IS MY ENGINE DEAD??!?!

i was driving and my check oil light came on but it always comes on for no reason so i kept driving then about 2 miles later the engine gets all loud and clanky. everything is way louder than it should be and it sounds like each cylinder is scraping metal. i then drive it a mile like that to kraigen and i put oil in it and some stuff to make oil thicker but the sound wont go away. the kraigen guys said i need a new engine. i hope its just a little problem.

PLEASE HELP!!

its a little problem called a rod bearing i bet. those are little parts, but thwne they brake you need a enw engine.

btw the oil light doesnt come on for no reason. it comes on for the reason you need a new engine, it means its time to fix the engine.

right now you can see about a rebuild and have them turn the crank and run a thicker bearing, or you can keep driving on it til you throw the rod and then you need a new block as well....

yeah when the oil light comes on, you're pretty much in deep ****. That means your car has like almost no oil left.

The resulting sound is your bearings spinning when they should not be.

Basically they are correct, either swap a new engine or rebuild the old one. Simplest deal is to swap.

yeah that low oil pressure light is exactly that - a low oil pressure light - and will come on anytime your oil pressure is subpar, the oil pressure switch will detect the low oil pressure condition and throw the light - low oil pressure could be caused by a faulty oil pump, oil passage restrictions, or in the most humanist of ways - insufficient quantity of oil all together.

Don't ever think that it lighting up is a good thing - or something not to worry about (unless it's the actual check light before the car is started, but goes out when the car is started). Having that thing come on is a serious situation and i'd recommend stopping right away, even though the damage is more than likely already done.

by the sounds of it your damage is already done. If you have an h23 consider dropping a vtec in (:

yeah - i'm not inferring that you yourself particularly do - but i know a lot of people think that the oil light is "low quantity" light (and to an extent it is - but only thru a function of pressure) which means that even if your oil is top top top - you can still get the light if your oil PRESSURE is low due to those reasons i stated above (and probably a few more).

so even if you get that blinking light and you check your oil and it's topped up - don't assume the engine will be ok. low pressure means slow/no moving oil - parts get hotter, things get worn, things get dirtier, it's just all bad.
look into the problem immediatley otherwise you'll end up on the side of the highway some day, staring in your engine bay wondering where the hell you went wrong.

as an aside that's expensive for the work that they did on your car man, especially since it was pretty much seal work - and i hope you demanded a discount for them denting your hood (take pics of your car before giving it in to service - IF you give your car to someone for service). the timing belt cover seal thing is pure bullshit, there's no oil there. I wonder if they did your oil cooler o-ring - that can be a culprit too - if not do it yourself next time you change your filter.

I'm assuming you spun a bearing. Low on oil and that happens. engine=poop now.

that sucks...it has been making funny noises also....but i figured out some of that is my clutch.....when i sit still at a light or something and the clutch is fully pressed down with the shifter in 1st, i rev my engine and a little before redline the car lurches foward...i know thats not good.

lets see....also between 3k and 5500 rpm it sounds like my engine is really rough...then it goes away...when driving and just revving, the sound is really hard to explain.

and i have noticed a little loss in power

not necessarily, mine came on more than once from a lack of oil
in my old motor. I never spun a bearing.

in his case, it's probably too late though

Exactly, or a bad oil pressure sender, oil pump, blocked pickup line, etc...

**** dude (not you SKDRCR), if it came on because you need a new engine, wouldn't it be a new engine light?

HAHA!! i just started it up today at around 4:30pm and then drove it down the street so as to take it to the mobil down the street. i get around my block and the noise stops alltogether and only the sound of a belt sqeaking can be heard. so i take it in anyway and they pretty much empty out my new oil with the freakin oil treatment stuff in there that costs like 10 bucks and they put newer oil in. then they spray some wd-40 on the belts and charge me 23 bucks. then i start driving home and the belts are still squeaking. so i put more wd-40 on it and the squeaking stops. so pretty much it was a worthless trip. i think god has mercy on the idiots once in a while. sorry to disprove anything posted above.

well the service rep. guy at honda told me all the noises were normal....so if he told me that, i should just keep driving until my engine explodes then it will be honda's fault....am i correct??

yea...i checked my oil today....and it was almost to the high dot...so that is ok....i'm just worried that i need a new engine....i'll probably buy a new car...sell the shell....we'll have to see thanks by the way, jared

Why sell the shell?

You can get a motor swap for a decent price.

HB!!!! Ahhh, I miss the waves (former OC'er)... anyway, I wish my mom would give me $250.... even for an xmas present.....

dude, why pay a lot of money to buy a new car when you can just buy a new engine, a better engine, for a fraction of the cost of a new(er) car??? If you had enough sense in the first place to buy a prelude, or receive mom or dad's hand me down, then you surely know that a new engine would surely kick some major ***, and definitely enough to warrant replacement of engine rather than car.....

i dont know how wise it was to buy a 91 prelude. does anyone know what a B21 is? if you do then go ahead and laugh. anyway. the pull broke into two pieces. thats why the power steering and battery went out.

anyway, buying a 91 prelude was not a smart choice. the seatbelt system is *****. who concers? anyone who has to go through the seatbelt locking up for no reason right after you shut the door will know. **** that.

the outer part became a separate piece. so it needs repairing.

Damn, that's not good....you must mean the crank pulley Also, I don't think you can repair it, so you'll need to get a new one.

Call a junkyard and buy a used CRANKSHAFT pulley for about $50 to $75. You should also get new drive belts. The car should be fine after that.
