Default 1991 accord cooling fan problems.

I have a 1991 honda accord lx coupe. The problem I have is that the cooling fan will be on when i turn the car off for about 10minutes. It will go off for a bit, then go on again for awhile. It will go on and off the whole night until it drains my battery. I have already changed the relay and it didn't work. Anyone know the problem to this?

Same **** would always happen to me with my 95 LX. I honestly can't remember what i did to stop it, but i think i might of just turned the car back on and off after the fan kept going. It hasn't happened in a while now.

It could be a faulty thermoswitch which is located near the thermostat housing. The fans are controlled by this and are designed to run if the engine is above a set temperature either with the ignition on or off. I would change the thermoswitch or unplug it to see if the fans stop when they are running. Don't leave it unplugged though because the motor will overheat if you get stuck in traffic

OK, so I have unplugged the thermoswitch when the car is turned off and the fan is running. This didn't do anything so i believe it's not the thermoswitch.

I also went to the honda dealership to get a price for a cooling fan timer. But because my car is not equipped with a/c, (mine is a lx) it doesn't have it. I went under the dash and passenger kick panel and there was nothing there.

I'm stumped and don't know what the hell to do....I constantly have to unplug the cooling fan relay after I drive the car so my battery doesn't die.

did you unplug the right one? there are 2 on the engine near the termostat housing. The one nearer to the front of the car is for the ECU. The one nearer to the firewall is for the fans. If you unplugged the right one, then I can only think there must be a short in the wiring circuit.

I actually unpluged both of them when the fan was running and it wasn't either of them. I'm totally stumped now and dont know what to do

try this....

http://www.honda.co.uk/owner/A....html

it's the Honda Shop Manual online, goto Electrical then the cooling fan control. Looking at the wiring without the timer, all it has in the circuit is the thermoswitch the relay and the fan. It can only be the relay if you have unplugged the switches. or the wiring is shorted somewhere... my bet would be the relay. Hope this helps.

Check this out.

Halfway down there's a wiring drawing. The right side shows the system without A/C.

Unplug the coolant temperature switch "A". Unplug the radiator fan relay. Use a multi-meter to check if there's any continuity to ground, on the wire from relay terminal D to the switch. It should NOT have continuity to ground.

If it shorts to ground, fix that wire & try again. If it doesn't short to ground, then it looks like a bad fan relay.

I have a 91 Honda Accord LX with AC, I replaced all sensors, drained, refilled and bled my cooling system. My car stays cool when I drive but once I park it and let it run for about 5 min the temp comes up. I popped my hood and I don't see the fan kicking on even when the needles is almost hitting red. Once I turn it off the radiator fan will kick on. The problem is I need it to kick on while the car is idling to keep it from overheating. What could it be?
I hear people talking about the fan relay and a timer.. Please help.

WATER PUMP (YAMADA)/WATER PUMP for 1991 Honda ACCORD SEDAN

Did you replace part number 14 in this illustration ? Was it replaced with a Honda part ? Where did you buy part number 14 and what is the exact part number you replaced it with ?

Yes, I replaced #14. I actually replaced all of the sensors. Autozone..
I replaced the fan relay last night, bled the system and took it for a spin, and then let it idle...it took about 5 minutes and it started overheating and the fan would not kick on. After I turned the car off it would kick on. Replaced the thermostat too..No visible leaks.

Instead of doing what the other guy did, buy part 14 directly from Honda. Install it. Make sure to crack the bleeder bolt(part 13) before you fill the radiator. Close the bolt when coolant starts to come out of it.

That should fix your issue.

Mine does this also, but not enough to kill the battery. The fans will stay on long after the car is turned off, and will randomly turn on at the strangest of times. I haven't worried about it because it hasn't killed the battery, but maybe I should, lol?

I had only read the last few replies when I replied. After looking at the entire thread it looks like your issue might be related to the fan timer. On our cars it's located underneath the dash on the driver side of the car. After removing the lower dash it will be up underneath on the left side.

It should be labeled the fan timer or the fan control unit. It would be best to ****** one from the junkyard. These cars are a dime a dozen at the junkyard.

The fan timer is actually the fans control unit.

However, if your fans only work when the ignition is off do then what i originally said. Its probably just part 14.

Theres a lot of people posting in this thread.
