Default Boys and Girls of the Prelude forum, help out my friend please

A friend of mine has a 99 Prelude with that Auto-stick tranny (SH?). Recently he's been having this problem with his car, where he will turn the key in the ignition, and he can hear the click-click-click but the engine will not turn over at all. A lot like when you have a car with a Viper immobilizer, and if you don't disarm it correctly then the engine will not start or turn over, but it will click. IIRC his lights come on, the radio works, dash lights up, the works, but the car doesn't start at all.
BUT, here's the catch: occasionally, the car WILL start up after a few tries. Eg. the last time it happened to him, he called me up and asked me what was wrong, and after about 10 minutes it finally started up.
I'm not too good with this sort of thing, but I remember reading a while back about how Integras have a common problem with the ignition switch going bad, and the symptoms sound very similar. I told him to jiggle the key a bit in the ignition when he turs it, I dunno if thats what helped though.
Any suggestions?

have you checked the starter to see if it is bad? Also check the bettery terminals to see if they have corrosion on then or a loose connection.

It sounds like a bad starter to me... When it won't start, try banging on the starter with a piece of heavy metal.

Also, if in the past he has tried to start the car for more than 15 seconds at a time that could also really cut down on the life of the starter. The reason being that the starter, when in use, is in a high overload situation. Basically the starter is using 24v to turn the car over via a starter switch that is a step up converter. And 24v creates a lot of heat witch in turn can do some damage to a starter if in use for more that 15 secs.

You also may want to check your ignition switch and cltuch safety switch (that is the little switch that only allows you to start the car only when the clutch depsressed), or the neutral start safety switch if the car is an auto.

Holy **** some of these answers are lame. 24v? that is classic.

Just tell him to clean the battery terminals, charge the battery then see if that helps, if not check the battery to see if it is shot, if not then check the alternator, then check relays. Or buy the Helms manual and follow their procedures to diagnose it.

why do you say 24v is a classic?

And how does the alternator effect the starting system?

There is a recall on 5th gen prelude iginition wiring. call Honda USA with your VIN and get it fixed.

I would get the battery tested, the starter tested, and the charging system tested. Sounds like you have a starter problem. If the battery holds a load test and the charging is 12.5-13.5 the alternator is fine and the battery is fine. If the start draw a big load when testing, it might be short out, or short to ground.....

I'll bet it's the starter. viper had it right, bang on the starter with a piece of metal to help it along, but you gotta get it replaced at some point.

same thing happened with my legend coupe back in the day. clicking, and the intermittent start.

I'm with these guys. Could be a bad battery/alternator or the ignition recall thing. Also, charging the battery means charging it with a trickle charger. It does not mean jump starting the car.

BTW, type SH Prelude's come only in 5 speed. There's no such thing as an automatic type SH Prelude.

Definitely either a corroding battery or bad alternator. My friend had the EXACT same problem just last week and we saw the battery was corroding(there was dry pus-like crap on the terminals) so we got a new battery and now it starts without any issues. If that didn't work it meant a new alternator so he's glad it worked.
