Default tranny question

my buddy just bought another 91 civic hatch, his first one got totalled. this new one is a damn 4 spd which sucks ***, so we're wanting to swap a 5 spd in, we got two options using a crx hf 5 spd tranny or his old 91 civic dx tranny, ( both of course are 5 .. ) both are free also... which would be a better tranny, our first thought was the crx one would be geared more for "performance" but then i pointed out the fact that it was the hf which was more of an economy car..

HAHAHAHAHAHA....you said performance and HF in the same sentence. The HF transmission was geared for fuel economy, straight up. There was no speed, there was no acceleration, just economy. The final drive is under 3.0 (3.25 in California) and the internals are also smaller since they have to deal with less power. If you take the DX transmission, you're getting the same gear ratio's as the Si, just a lower final drive: 3.88:4.25.
