1st gen crx si going to scca itb: recommended 6" rims for itb and itc?
if i am to run my '85 si in itb next year, i need to get some itb legal 6" rims.
i would prefer to go with 14" since the tires can then be used on my 88 si 14x7 rims.
what are the preferred rims for itb and itc hondas in 14x6? how about 13x6?

Miata wheels might be a hub center problem unless the early Si's had smaller hubs than I think they do.
14x6 VW alloys are plentiful and cheap as well. The wheels from an Audi 4000 Quattro weigh about 13 lbs are are pretty indestructible. The car my first set of race wheels came off of was completey mangled and the chassis was twisted about 5 degrees but the wheels were fine with a couple scratches.
BTW, I would suggest not bothering with 14's if you can get away with it. I would imagine you will need all the lightness in the drivetrain and gearing you can get and a 225/45-13 will be a lot shorter and lighter than a 225/50-14. Just a thought.
Then again, 13x6's are probably 10 kinds of a bitch to find.

I've not used these wheels myself, but I've heard good things about these 'superlites'. Pretty much a minilite/panasport copy. Very reasonably priced, too. Not sure on if the 23 offset on the 13x6 is enough for that CRX, though.

Edit: BMW "Bottlecap" wheels from the e30 three series are cheap, strong, and plentiful (as in find them in every single junkyard ever). They are sort of heavy, though. They're 14x6 ET 35.

I have been researching this some also but have not found any good options for tire sizes on my ITC CRX in a 14 or 15" wheel. I like the short 185/60-13 tire due to the effect on the car's gearing.
As for 13x6 wheels- Panasports are very light and pretty strong as are Revolution wheels. The 13" revolution is supposed to be a different casting from the 14" that people have reported issues with on VWs.

Those Superlites look like a good deal. The 23mm is going to be the outer limit, but we ran 225/45/13 Hoosiers on my car with 25mm Volks and it worked.
It'll be close, but if you do some strategic pulling and tugging on the fenders, it should work.
Right now I'm using 33mm offset Hayashis with 5mm spacers (thats a net of 28mm for the math challenged). No issues at all.
The Panasports are also 28mm.
23mm... Yeah. I think It'll work. And it will DEFINATELY work with the 185 tire.
As far as 13 vs. 14. I know quite a few people with early Sis that are going to ITB and ALL of them are sticking with 13s for the gear ratio.
I'm going by memory, but I think the 225/50/14 Hoosier is nearly 2" taller than the 225/45/13. Thats HUGE in the gearing department.

with regards to gearing, i do have the 4.93 final drive so i am not as concerned about tire diameter as i once was.
mostly concerned about having to drop ~$500 for wheels and adding 150# or so in ballast. i need to pay more attention to the rules discussions.
i welcome the chance to run up front with itb but there is a significant cost associated with this. i think i'd rather run ita with a lower minimum weight. the ~1980 # with driver was easy to achieve and could have dropped another 50# without too much trouble.
thanks for the suggestions.

As I recall, the new wording allows the '85 Si to go to 14" wheels, but can the '86 and '87 CRX Sis go to 13" wheels?
There's no provision in the new size rule to allow a car to use smaller wheel than that on the spec line. If the CRX is listed with 14s, it will have to use 14s, even as they are restricted from the A-spec 7" width down to 6".

The 85 CRX Si came stock with 13s while the 86 and 87s came stock with 14s so you could run either 13s or 14s on the first gen CRX Si before the rule change. Now you have the option of running 13s or 14s or 15s on the car but are limited in width by the ITB rule- I believe max of 6" width for ITB.
That's kind of a bonus, to have the choice. You are right about the 6" width requirement.
