Default OVERHEATING**HONDA PRELUDE 93**OVERHEATING

Hey how are you?
My name is Rhys and im from australia. I brought a 1993 Prelude, i guess its the base model its not vtech but its 2.2l . The day i brought it i drove it for 3.5 hours from the dealer to my house and on the way i was doing 100km/h. The car kept overheating but the engine didnt seem to get hot, it was raining hard. I turned the car off and turned it back on a minute later and the temp guage had gone right down to half way from in the red. There is no possible way a car could cool down that quick but this seemd to, When i took off it did it again 2 or 3 more times and then stoped. After owning it for about 3 weeks, everytime it started raining when i had the lights and whiipers on it seemd to go into the red in the temp guage or close. And sometimes happended in the dry. I could sometimes make it go up and down a notch by turning the lights and whipers on but sometimes it didnt seem connected to the problem. It happens from time to time for no apparent reason, tonight it did it, and when i arrived home after stopping twice, even though for the last mmonth it hasnt done it at all really, it was one red when i got home and i could hear the watter boiling in the plastic bottle where coolant is kept, but the engine didnt seem hot.

I have already had the radiator taken out flushed and replaced the whole top tank because of a tiny crack, and also replaced thermostat. I orginaly thought it was just a problem with the guage because the engine performance wasnt affected in the slightest even when it was in the red, but on this occasion the water in the plastic coolant bottle was boiling which led me to believe it was more than just a faulty guage.

Incase it help the A/C is slightly dodgey as you have to move to air condidtion assembly in the dash around alittle bit till the A/C light comes on. And also if it helps the speedo seems a little dodgey as sometimes the needle mmoves slow or sits on a speed around 40km/h for a few seconds then jumps upto 60km/h.

I hope you can help me with this problem as im stuck and its stressing me out so much i dont want to drive it as heating problems can cause major damage to engines!!
Sorry about the long email but your help is priceless.

Sounds like there is a short in the temperature sensor. check to see if there is any corosion on the points or if there are any shorts in the wires.

Ok, well do your cooling fan comes on, you will hear it when the fan come on... On the prelude it take about 10 min or longer (cold) for the fan to come on. Flushing the radiator is not going to fix if the port inside is plug up. You will only get half of the radiator cooling and that will not help it cool down. Water boiling in the reservior is bad new. The t-stat is some time bad but you have change it so, I would check the fan and make sure it works....
