17" tires on 94 accord cause poor gas mileage?
Hello,
Just wondering how much 17" Alloy Racing Heart Alloy Rims would affect Gas Mileage on a 94 Ex Accord?
I have tried cleaning my egr ports, with no luck. I also have changed my belts, plugs and wires, ignition coil, fuel filter, oil and filter. All of this was done within the last couple months. Anyway I am averaging about 18mpg. It is an auto, but still I believe I am supposed to get anywhere from 21-30 mpg.
Thanks in advance.

it can actually, whats your tire size? most aftermarket rims are a bit heavier + rotational mass and all that...
it might just be your clock thats reading wrong, but you might be getting the right mileage.
O <-howmany spins will that take to reach here?
o <- takes alot more spin to get here than the bigger one?
if i confused you sorry, its late and i had a long day.

it depends of ur tire size, what is ur tire size.
beucase if ur tires are smaller than oem wheels, it makes the wheels spin more times which might increase ur mileage and maybe gas consumption.
if ur car is an EX ur oem tire size should be : 195/60-15 and u will need 205/40/17
if its a lx it should be 185/70-14 and u will need 205/45/17
but this is what i think, u will maybe have to inquire more urself
good luck

I have 19's with 215/35's and I barely get 25 mpg highway. On Stocks I get about 28mpg. Its a combination of rotational weight and speedometer error that causes the lower mileage.
I just watch the mile markers on the highway and my trip odometer. It reads 0.9 for everymile so I get about 10% less mileage than I'm really going. Those mile markers are accurate to the foot since the are done by professional surveyers.

hey, I didn't know you went with a 205/40/17. You should have gotten the 205/45/17. Thats is if they made that tire in that size of course. Basically your tires are spinning more times to travel the same distance as your stock tires would. I don't know if it'll actually make that big of a difference though.

It's funny you say that. He was questioning the acuracy of his speedometer the other day. Have you called around to get that checked yet?

umm...no. 195/60/15 and 185/70/14 have the same diameter (close enough anyway) so they should both require a 205/45/17.

yeah, second was TouringAccord said give or take a few milimeters. After working at a tire shop I can confidently say the general rule is 10 up 5 down (to keep from screwing up your spedometer)...and your rim size doesn't matter as long as your overal radius stays the same. So from a stock 195/60/15 HR which has an optional 205/55/15 you should go to a 205/55/17 HR 215/50/17 HR or somewhere close on the aspect ratio.
When you go to buy tires, each tire should have a comprehensive data sheet they'll have stashed away. It will show each and every tire size they offer for the particular type of tire and the overal dimensions, that's what you want to look at. As long as those dimension stay the same or very close you're good (and it still stays on the rim).
And please fellas pay attention to your speed ratings (I've been bitched at so many times "but I never do 130 mph!!!"), it does affect how your car stops and handles. You can go up but don't go down.

Thanks everyone for your input thus far. I would like to mention some details I failed to mention. First my Rims are buddy club, not racing heart...sorry my head was up my ***. Also I just switched to the current tires which are all seasons, before the new ones I had a pair of kumho 215/45/R17s. I was having crappy gas mileage then too.
When I purchased this vehicle it came with 17" wheels so I have no idea what gas mileage was like pre 17's. So I was just throwing that out there as a possible cause for the extra crappy fuel mileage.
Thanks.
