Default Honda ATV 1989 Fourtrax 300 help.

I am a certified ASE auto technician which makes me twice a s stupid as the normal person that knows nothing about 4-wheelers, because i know a little about cars which makes me think i know a little about 4-wheelers. Which i dought is the same thing.

I just got a 1989 honda 300 fourtrax, and the key cylinder will not turn.

I removed the key cylinder and the number on the key is r45 and the number on the cylinder is D45.

Now, i know i have the wrong key, my question is.. Besides a dealer, where can i find a key to fit this. Also, do i need just a key, or a key cylinder and keys?

I called a dealer and he said it would cost 189$ just for the key cylinder and i am not going to pay for that. I can hotwire it and get it to run, but it was fully restored before i got it, and now i don't want to jerry rig somthing.

Any help would be great.

Thanks in advance.
Chris

Call a local lock smith. We're not the 'Key Maker' Neo.

go to a local atv or motorcycle salvage yard. or even ebay. you can buy the whole key and keylock from another atv and it should fit the whole and come close to plugging in. all it does it cut the power to the system, not as technical as a car ignition.

a mobile lock smith should be able to cut a key for that cylinder, not the cheapest thing, but less than a new cylinder.

or you could wire it to fire up with no key if security is not an issue

just by-pass the ignition, and hard wire it. it takes 20 seconds. there are two wires that hook up to the ignition. just unpug them from the cylinder, and hook them stright up. if anyone is gonne steal this quad, their gonna know where these wires are. although it kind of defeats the point of an ignition. I have never known of a onda Quad I couldnt hot wire in less then 30 sec. Sad really on honda's part, but owhell. just put a kill swith on it, and use that for a key. the wires on thosa connect further down te sterring stem, making it harder ot hard wire, unless you got a pair of wire cutter's.
