Default how bad is this head? (warning massive pictures 56k nono)

I bought this head, the description said that it was working well when pulled out of the car.
my specific questions are:
-are those intake springs stock, they look like they have a diamond cross section to me.
-are the grooves normal on the cam followers? the head I took off didn't have them.
-is that amount of carbon normal in the combustion chamber?
-should the milling of the head, if stock, make the combustion chambers anything outside of perfectly round? There are bumps coming out where the exhaust valves are.

Those rockers look a little worn. How many miles are supposedly on this head ?

unknown mileage, i didnt ask because its too easy to just say something.
My thinking is because the springs may not be stock, and stiffer springs and taller cams may have caused it.

that head looks like pretty high mileage, you should go get some carbon remover and try and clean up those CC , the vtec assembley looks like it has some wear on it, but nothing to bad.

once you get it cleaned up , won't b too bad

atleast your wasn't packed with packing peanuts like mine was when i bought it, grrrrr

at least you (hopefully) didn't find a non-honda bolt and a staple rolling around in the valvetrain!

touche!

but clean that head up , and maybe if you feel like it take the valves out one at a time to examine the valve seats, primarly the exhaust ones. and maybe do valve seals while they are out, just preventitive matainance in my mind

Check your spring pressure...good possiblility that you might have rounded off your cam/s those finger followers look pretty bad. Other than that (from what I can tell from the pictures) looks like a good core. Have it rebuilt by someone who knows what they are doing.

i sold a beautiful low mileage head with bent valves and bought this one because i wanted to just put a working one on. I am putting it on as is, but it just sucks that it wasnt as good as my old one, that head was a great buy for whoever got it i guess...

The head mating surface has a substantial amount of pitting. I would take it to a machine shop and have them look at it.

i saw this, and planned to have the mating surface milled just enough to flatten it. This would take care of any warpage as well

--look at the first pics though, are those hexagonal springs stock?

imo...its an o.k. head. just looks like some miles. i would take the time to get a p&p and swap out the valvetrain.

the retainers look a little pitted. the rockers look like they overheated and changed color. probably ran different cams without the initial lube. the combuston chamber looks better than some.

sorry...i do NDI(non-destructive inspecton) part time.
