Is it safe to run untuned?
I plan on getting ITR cams very soon and my plan was to just drop them in with cam gears left at zero degrees until i would have money in the summer to dyno tune my car. After talking to my friends dad, he said that i shouldn't drop cams in my car cause i can actually make my car slower unless i get dyno tuning. He also said my car could blow if i run an untuned car at high rpms. What do you guys think? If thats the case, i don't want to risk the life of my car and i think i'll just wait til the summer and get everything done at the same time.
yea if you do just drop them in without any tuning you do may "blow" the motor and it would end up looking like this...
hahaha!
just kidding.
yea you can just install them and leave it untuned forever if you want...tuning things like fuel pressure and cam gears on the dyno would help you get the most power out of the new cams. As long as they are installed properly you will have nothing to worry about.

i just recently dropped some CTR cams in my GSR a couple days ago. i got a valve adjustment and a new valvetrain(ITR springs and Portflow Ti RetainerS). im running on 0,0 cam settings and i have not lost ANY power. low end and mid range has greatly improved, cept at VTEC 4400, the power kind of dips and comes back again at 6k. after 6k hell breaks loose.
im getting my car tuned properly in the spring. but i will get it dynoed with a 02 sensor to find out if i need more fuel or anything in the meanwhile just to be safe.
sorry for the long post but hope it helps

SGT-Do i need the ITR valve springs if i keep my stock redline/rev limiter. I don't plan on doing any tuning til the summer when i can gather enough money for the tuning itself, itr valve springs, obd 1 chipped ecu, v-tec controller. Assuming i take my car to the shop to have my cams/camgears installed, i should have no problems right? I guess if i'm not going to dyno them til summer, i should just get the cam gears in the summer too.
da_rockwilda-thats what i was expecting at the 4400 rpms x-over. Is it really that noiceable? Does it sorta feel like just a sudden surge of power? or does it feel like **** and lumpy?
thanks you guys, all very helpful information.

CAR-wise, yes...
however, mentally and emotionally, NO
i had my toda b's for 200 miles, untuned, in my gsr with stock exhaust...
sucked, had no power, made no power
ugh...
it's cool tho now

I highly recommend the ITR valvesprings. People have run stock springs with
ITR/CTR cams, but why risk it.
Also, w/o SKUNK2 manifold and a vtec controller, it'll feel real slow until around
6000rpm when the cams start making power.

haha! sorry about that.
Thats my friends turbo gsr...seems that he had a small electrical problem yesterday
while driving, the whole dash caught on fire then spread to the engine bay and hit the fuel line...and then basically his whole car was on fire. Not cool...especially since im gonna be the one pulling that charred motor out this weekend.
Yea you'll be ok for now on the stock gsr valvesprings..but if you plan on going over the stock rev limiter, upgrade to the type r valvetrain.

hey da rockwilda,
all you gotta do is get a vtec controller and bump your vtec up to 6000 rpm
or bump your feul up and that problem should be gone. your car is running lean
before it hits vtec due to the higher lift cams
