Default Plans for car ramps?

I'd like to build a nice big set of ramps. Something that I could drive up on and get all four wheels to have a lot of access. It would really help if I had more access...and I obviously can't afford a hydraulic lift. Any ideas? Thanks.

Y a i wanted the exact same thing, I even got out the pencil and pad one day during US history class earlier this year, bore. I was first learning how to weld and trying to think of anything to weld and make. Personally I wanted some thing that could fold away somehow, i have a two car garage and my Dad has a thing with storing all types of crap in there. Im restoring a 70 bug so between all of those parts, some random **** my dad threw out there and tools I have no room. I'll try to find those plans btw I had a friend of mine who is a arcitect look these plans over so they weren't just stick figures drawn by a 16yr old day dreaming in class. Even though thats what I do most of the day most of the day. Ya I have a notebook random plans for 300 zillion different build ups of my and my friends car to a wooden desk for my sister.

Sorry for the long post maybe some of you guys may enjoy reading my shpeal but most likely not ohh well...out

SOCH D16 is my lady in black

WTF where'd you get GSR swap. Dont hate on D series, I'll spend the 4k that you spend on a B swap, build up my D16 and smoke your stock B all day long. In other words "stop hatin and start appreciating".

I was attempting a shot at humor. GSR swap into the bug.

Go to a car dealership and take a look at what they drive the cars on for show, after seeing them I really started thinking if these would be good to hold cars and go under them.

I've thought about it too. I was thinking about landscape timbers not metal though. It would just be a series of small ramps leading up to a larger ramp based on the ground clearence of your car. I don't need the thing to high, just enough to get a creeper under there.

I have seen and been around rail road ties, that sound really unsafe.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about ? I know Jeep dealerships do this a lot to make the jeep look like its crawling up hill.

I-beams and concrete. been there 15 years so dont go sayin it doesnt look safe or any of that crap. better than a lift. i can be on top and bottom at same time without climbing ladders. welder rolls out on ramp to the right.

this beast goes around car but inside rails of pit so you can pull out from the top or lower down under car. made of 6" channel, a weight bench, cherry picker head, $70 piston, EF trailing arms, ebrakes. head swivels and misaligns pretty far. goes from ground to 6ft high, rolls over bumps, dirt, etc with V8 + trans like a breeze.

that homemade ramp is freakin' killer!!!!

props to you or whoever made it.

that rolling cherry picker is badass too. i like how you can lower the motor under the car, or lift it out.

I just don't see the point in having the vehicle that high. You can't stand under it, its to high to lay under and be able to reach anything, so you either have to kneel and crank you head to the side or crouch and kill you legs/back.

But if thats what you really want to make just look @ the pictures, go to a dealer ship and take pictures/notes.

i built the cherry picker in about 2 days. i think its worth about $400.. i know one you buy for that much cant hold a candle to it rolling around in my muddy yard. on the next one i will not weld on the trailing arms, rather just the center spindle outward. it would be much slimmer that way.

my father built the pit when i was a kid. this is what i do for a living, strictly in my back yard. if this **** impresses you, you should see the rest of our inventions.

i agree with the guy who said that the working height on that dealer display stand sucks. pits are meant to stand under. if i were gonna do one like that, id call a construction company and get about 8-10 thick concrete highway dividers, not the tall skinny ones, the short fat ones. i know a guy who double stacked those and has a pit he drives dumptrucks out on. id cement the center for a creeper and some long ramps up to it and mount a hand boatwinch at the other end. having a car spit wooden ramp out driving up is dangerous, and you and your ten buddies wont always be available to push the car up. also, letting them down is safer. i know im pushing cars around with the brake calipers removed pretty often. launching a civic into your neighbors fence wont be cheap. use a winch and be safe.

honestly though, digging into the ground is easier. whatever you do, make sure there is enough room to safely put the car up on it and then on jackstands. our pit has angle iron lips on the inner rails that we lay oak planks across wherever. you always need to put an oilpan or jack under there. when i do swap, the front of the car is on jackstands. i can usually remove in about 4 hours, alone and in a safe controlled manner (without laying on my back in the snow anymore!)

how do you know if what you build is strong enough short of being certified or having someone certify it? destruction testing..

steel has ratings based on structural shape, grade, thickness, etc. certain bracing schemes are better than others. lots of structural engineering/building books available. main requirement is common sense.

everything i build is usually overkill. when i first try things out im just cautious, slow, apply partial loads. if something looks like its flexing or maybe too flimsy, i beef it up.

when i was 17 i built a dual axle 18 foot car trailer (24 foot OAL) and its probably got 15,000 highway miles, hauled several 4500 lb vehicles. you just keep paying attention and improving throughout its lifespan.

Well when failing means the end of your life, I don't think you can ever overkill.

i suppose thats true. but we didnt have to go to such extremes. those beams are 1/2" thick, 20 inch height, 8 inch top and base. they support skyscrapers and 4 lane bridges. the 2 cement pilings are the diameter of a 55 gallon drum ontop 3X3X2 block and filled solid. i dont think one civic is asking too much. many dumptrucks have sat on there for a week. its an extra parking stall for us when not in use.

not many other devices in my yard are death defying.
