Salts/ sand/ rocks...these are just a few things that highway departments use on icy/ snowy roads to help with traction. All of those will help in deteriorating the finish on your wheels.
And if his OEM wheels (which I might add are super clean on any H-car) are his daily rollers, then I can see why he would want to change them out for the winter.
BTW...CLEAN *** DA.

to preserve the rims for spring/summer. he may have a set of steelies with winter tires on there or he may simply not want to risk the possibility of damage to the spring/summer wheels.

Its less of a hassle to have a set of winter tires on a cheap set of rims and just change wheels than it is to change tires twice a year.
Its even easier to have two cars though.

i just installed them today along with my new oil pan.
big difference from the tires that i had 195/50/15 to 185/60/14.
the sidewall seems to be much softer it handles worse, even tho the tires are brand, new kumho ecsta 716s.

nice ride but you need stock wheels to replace stock wheels for winter?? ahhaah just sounds funny to me. but i understand. you dont want to mess up the finish on your ls wheels.
