How change power steering fluid?
Thanks for you time and your help. I have looked at archieves but cannot find.
I have a 98 Accord. The steering fluid is very black. How do you change the power steering fluid?
In the past, I would disconnect the bottom hose from the reservior to drain it. I would fill the res with new OEM fluid. However, as soon as I turn on the car, the fluid becomes black again because it would mix with the old liquid. There has to be a better way.
One procedure I thought of is first drain the res by taking off the hose connecting to the res. The reattach the hose. Run the car and turn the steering wheel until the res would fill up. Do this until the res stops filling with fluid. Then, refill the res with new fluid and keep an eye on it.
Thank you for teaching me...Ariel

Lift the front of the car so there's no resistance to the steering. There's a cooler line down low, the cooler is just a loop of steel tube in front of the radiator. Find a hose that you can disconnect to drain it. Turn the steering lock-to-lock a couple times to drain it. With the engine running, it'll be a little messy. Don't leave the engine running any longer than you have to.
After you refill it, turn it lock-to-lock again with the engine running. Then the fluid will be all foamy, let it settle for an hour & refill it. Run it again, let it settle, refill, until it doesn't foam any more.

This is what i did, may not work if your fluid is really bad.
Just open the reservoir cap and using a syringe drain out ur power steraring fluid above the drain level. Do this carefully, without letting the fluid level go below the drain opening.
Refill it.
Start your car, and turn the wheel a couple of times.
Repeat this again after a week till your fluid is clear.
I do this every six months for both my power stearing and break fluid (no need to turn the wheels for brake fluid)

I think it maybe ok for PS fluid, but for brake fluid it is not good, because they don't circulate around, and most contamination is at the brake, so you are keeping your dirt and water at the caliper and you keep replacing the good ones up there.
