I know this is the common responce, But man have her reconsider for something smaller. (Ninja 250)

Its your guys decision but if my girlfriend ever bought a bike, I would be scared to death is she had a 250 let alone something bigger.

my 2 cents, take it into consideration if you like

A 94+ Yamaha FZR can be had in that range and makes a good beginner bike.

idk, thinking it is unsafe for a girl to get a 600 is like saying it is unsafe for me to start off on a 600 (which i did, and wrecked) she doesn't want anything less than a 600, shes 5'11 and rode dirt bikes all her like on the farm as well as my bike a few times... she wants to take the msf course, and i think she can handle a 600cc bike.

Katana is a great starter bike, however EXTREMEMLY heavy if she were to drop it. You may want to consider a CBR600F2 as a starter bike. Lower seating position and a bit lighter than the Kan-A-Tuna....

I've seen some locally for around $3k in good condition. I'm sure you could find a deal in your area.
