I've been doing some research and I still have some questions about the 404s, they say that they are not so good with daily driving, but they make reatarded power. well I just need to know the pros and cons and what would the best set of valves springs retainers for these cams. Good looks guys. appreciated
search, search, search. type in crower and youll get all you need. they arent good for daily driving because of the idle and the power. the thing is they arent good for daily driving because when you daily drive your only reving up to 3 or 4 usually. as far as springs and retainers go, get the one from crower that they recoommend. you dont wanna mix up company names with cams and spring sets. such as crower cams and skunk2 spring set. i had a lot of questions such as you and learned it all from searching. gl
404s don't idle bad like some people say they do. 403s can idle just like stock and 404s can idle almost as good as stock if you tune it. the 404 is not such a crazy cam. i would use them for a daily driver.

Don't you need to tune the cams anyways since they won't have the same idle as stock?

Mine lope like a mother........(404's) at like 600-800rpm, however they need a tune! When I had 403's they sounded stock at idle!

go 404's bro. i have the 403's and if i could do it all over i woulda got the 404's. the 403's are good dont get me wrong, but having more power from the 404's is always better.
alot of people with the 404's say they have no problems with it at idle. u just gotta tune it good. i had problems with my car idling as soon as i installed my 403's. the car would shut off on me alot. to fix it, i just raised my idle a little bit and increased my fuel pressure and then tuned it down with my SAFC. tuning is the key with cams. i still need to get my car tuned after i put n my pistons. also if u go with the 404's, defintly build ur block with high compression pistons.

i love that lopey sound
u shoulda kept ur idle at around 800 not 600. if i turn my idle down to 600 on my 403's, the car would stall out on me whenever i snapped the throttle and let off.

I'm using 404s on my daily driven all-motor b18a1.
My idle is bearable. At cold starts, i have to sit there with my foot on the gas, holding 1500rpm for about 30 seconds, then it idles on it's own.
I'm curious for the people that say they idle like stock....how many of you actually have overlap on the cams?
At warm idle, it bounces from 1000-500rpm....
chug, chug, chug, chug.
And before you guys ask, yes my car has been tuned.
Also...I'm not sure what your plans are, but if you're not planning on upping the compression, get the 403s intead.

Same here! I was wondering if my car was supposed to flucuate idle like that, b/c I have been trying to fix it but it still goes from 1K to 500 almost cutting off and then to 1K again, and once in a while it'll stay at like 600 and lope like a ****

did u try to turn up the idle screw some more or is it at it's maximum position. mine did that too and i just turned up the idle screw so that it idled at 700-800

I adjusted my idle screw, throttle cable, and ignition timing before i got it to idle half-way decent!

well...i'm running a 4 overlap on my cams, so i don't expect the idle to be like stock.
The car had a better idle with 0 overlap. After dyno tuning, the idle is way rougher.
I played with both the idle screw and hondata s200. I'm confident this is the best i can get the idle without sacrificing power.
This goes back to my original questions....are any of you guys running overlap at all on the cams?

404's Idle good... I mean what can u expect? untuned my car never shutoff at idle and tuned its good, stay steady at 900 then drops to 700-500 for a few secs then returns to 900 - Im sure its another problem. But yeah raise the idle to 800-900 with hondata Etc and you'll be fine. And I got the low CR b20.. For now! >

with stock CR you'll lose power below 5000rpm, but will probably gain a good 10-15whp over bolt-ons, with raised CR you could see gains over 30-40whp with the right exhaust set-up, IMO a shorter tranny is a must with the 404's because they change your powerband quite a bit.
My 404's idle like a rock, according to the AFC it fluctuates a teeny bit from 740-760, no overlap, at first it was dying when I'd snap the throttle I just had to raise the FP and dial it out with the afc until she idled perfect, it took about 1 minute.
remote starts and idles perfect at -25C

Somebody over on G2IC asked that i take a sound clip of my idle for them, so i thought I might as well post it here:

(350KB sound clip)
Keep in mind my car has been dyno tuned, so it's running some overlap. The idle has been improved, as well with the Hondata.
and yes....it stalled once....i guess she was a little camera shy
Sound clip was taken from inside the car with the windows down, inside my garage.
idle is fluctuating from ~400-1100rpm
