Auto-darkening helmets
I always hear that welding causes eye damage even if you wear a helmet.
Yet, i been looking at some of newer auto-darkening helmets and they seem to do a great job of protection your eyes.
I a total noob to welding and i want to give it a try. What do you guys think?

all I can say is get a good helmet, cause flash burn is not a good thing. I have never heard about getting long term damage to your eyes if you wear a helmet. n e way the helmet miller gives out with their welders works well enough. I konw there are other ones with special designs and faster response times to the arc, but I couldn't tell you which ones are the good ones
The most important thing to look for is a good plastic lens over what ever darker lense you use. This acts as a "pre-shield" and protects your eyes from the u-v rays. A good auto-darkening lense will flash with in 1/64Th of a second( i cant remember if this number is correct...) There will most certainly always be eye damage no matter what you do.

Its serious, but not that serious. Just think back at all the old timers welding and can still see today, sure they would have been better off with eye protection but they can still see. It's like going out in the sun can give you cancer, sure can but its not that serious... Your not going to go blind if your not one of those "I can weld w/o a helmet" fools.

i have a hornell speedglas and dont even use the autodark.
the auto option is nice. but, after a full day welding and all the little flashes before it darkens, not to mention the flashes when the solar panel is blocked
, i can actually see a sun burn on my eye *****.
i prefer to use a shade 10 or 11 depending upon the amperage.
hope this helps.

no, i had a friend that used to stripe all of Titan Motocycles paint and stripe it.
i do know that he used just basic automotive paint and its lasted over a year welding daily.
the striping was all free hand.
anyone else have any painted helmets?
and no, the skeleton one doesnt count
