I'll talk to him to see if he has time, its not really a shop like you're thinking. it's at his house. the biggest thing right now is getting the race bike prepped for next season, i'll see if he has time and what it would cost. do you have any pics so i can show him what he'd be working with?

I'll have some pics posted later tonight, here's the web diary of the conversion I'm doing though:

not really a bunch of custom welding, most of it is literally just tossing a bead down the outer edge of the mating surface on both sides (since the head gasket pokes out some without them there), welding closed one hole on the front, and welding a block to the back of the head. That's pretty much it.

hell, I'm not in a super rush as it is, as long as I can get the head back in 1-2 weeks I'll be happy.

thats what I dont understand??? why are these places so bad about doing this?? I mean damn, it's not like I'm not going to get the head milled afterwards.......

I dont care if they use to much heat and warp the mating surface or not, it's GOT to be milled flat again afterwards anyway due to some of the welds I need done....

where is this at??

One of the reasons is probably that the alu in a head is often contaminated and it's hard to get a clean weld. Soaking metal in oil and coolant does NOT make for an ideal welding enviroment.

but yet there are plenty of shops that will repair aluminum heads that have had valve damage?? I dont understand this. the welding I want done is no more difficult than repairing that kind of damage. Hell, the plate I need welded to the back isn't even in a critical torque area. All it has to do is make a clean penetration weld. After the head is milled the head gasket will take care of everything else....

sigh, still waiting and trying to find a shop that will do this....and I'm not the first person to do this kind of modification to this head either, it's common place in the "circle" I'm working out of.

dont worry about it, went looking through the yellow pages again and came across eagle machine shop in lawrenceville.

called em up and got the hourly quote of $60 an hour which is right about what I was thinking and they've done these head mods before and told me straight up that it would be two hours labor which is just about what I had in mind that it would cost so I'm good to go.

thanks anyway!
