How do I take this first corner?
If it takes longer than 2 seconds to go around it, hit the cone and skip it completely. Seriously.
Otherwise, it looks like left is the way to go.

Depends on the car and driver... if you can trust yourself not to push too wide, then I'd go to the left side of the first cone as it should be a shorter path of travel. If you think that you'll get nervous and push wide on the turn then I'd go to the left as it won't penalize you as harshly.
As always, just my $0.02

ha! I just now realized that it was an optional gymhkhana cone, I thought the only way to take it was right

I forgot about that technique as it doesn't happen often but I have seen a section where this method was faster though. We had a slow chicago box where you pretty much had to go down to about 25 mph vs. not lifting at 55 or so. We tested it both ways and ended up being faster just running straight over the middle cone in the chicago box.

The ONLY auto-x that I ever did well in - won my class, in fact - had one of those spinny things. I was driving a then-new rear-drive Mazda GLC and it was below freezing outside, on a dead kart track in Billings, MT. There were actually ice patches on the course...
I took the ratchet mechnanism out of my parking brake before runs started, went tearing up to it in second gear with just a little left steering dialed in, peered out of the driver's side window and, when I saw the cone pass my front tire, yanked on the P-brake, spun about 270*, downshifted to first, and beat feet out of there.
Worked like a champ.

Gah! I hated when they put a single cone up and said do a loop around it. It' s really not that fun to go around a cone in 1st gear. I would just plow that sucker!! and it would not hurt your times... they will learn to never put that crap on their auto-x couse anymore. Gets old picking that cone up after each car, lol.
What a horrid first turn. Do they really think anyone will take a 270 degree turn over a 90 degree turn? If I wasn't in a points race I would smack that cone (and try to take it with me) every run.
One time we had this course that had such a tight start that many cars were having trouble fitting through it at any speed. One driver in protest DNFed before the lights, looped around, re-entered the course from a different angle and got a running start at the finish.

that's easy, just make a loop around it, if you go around it with the cone on your left, then you will be set-up for the slaloms after it, or you could just act like you're goin around it, hit it, and move on. it might be quicker

I spent some time thinking about it and if the penalty for missing (knocking over) a cone was 1 second than I'd just skip it completely. There's now way you can go around that thing in under 1 second. Think how long 1 second really is.
Skip it, you'll win.

Hmmm....If I only had a V8 in the camaro I'd easily do the loop'de'loop...
Actually think I will try it at least once with entry on right side of cone just for fun and an educational experience... either first or second run. RalleyeCross HoooOOOO! lol

Ah, man - that is fight'n words! You really want me to bring the Tacoma out from retirement!
Yeah I do hear you on STF class - it was a fun class when there was the 4 or 5 cars (+ 1 truck
) in class. But seems everyone has moved on to other classes.
But now you got me thinking about vehicle choice for Sunday's autocross. Maybe the truck will come out and play one last time in STF class... Hmmm.

lol, I'd hate to be one of the many to be beaten by the Taco!
Houston SCCA runs a special street tire class (replaces STS), which has 7 sub classes. STA-F mimic the respective SP classes, while STU is an unlimited street tire class...

I don't think I would intentionally hit the pylon (with my car), though I think I would reach out the window and knock it down with my hand. I have done that at least twice (to manage to stay on-course, such as after a spin). However, it is a little easier when driving a TR3 Triumph...
I've designed an autox course or two with a pivot pylon, but never at the start.

Man, and it's right at the beginning so you can't even hope to have the momentum to e-brake around if you wanted to do it as a pivot/pin cone.
The one time I had a pin cone you slalomed into it and slalomed out of it (slaloms formed a V with you having to pivot around the cone at the point.. there was a bit of room between the pin cone and the slaloms, though..
Pushed through it all day long. Got frustrated, and before my final run thought-- "Screw it all, I'm hand-braking it!" I did it, and to my surprise, it worked _beautifully_! I was so surprised and happy about it, I didn't notice how much more speed I was carrying into the exit slalom than my earlier runs. Hitting the brakes at the same point as I had done previously was too late this time, and I ending up spinning the car and ruining the run.
Never have had another course like that where hand-brake made any sense, and am still surprised how well it worked out that one time.. (beginner's luck, no doubt) (GS Integra GSR Sedan on stock tires, btw..)
I'd go left.
edit: clarification

There are a number of weird elements in that course. Without walking it I can't really say but I bet its not as much fun as a Roger, the real, course. Seems like there are several places where lay down cones actually delineate the course.
I would not hesitate to run over that pivot cone at the start, or the single cone between stations 1 and 2 or the pointers at the exit to Ode to Gus or the last inside cone before Toast In the Bucket. Of course without walking it, one cannot be sure. My guess is that they will add some cones before the event or after first heat when the fast times are put down on "dirty" runs.
