Help With My Senior Project
So for my senior year in highschool in place of my exams at the end of the year i have to do a senior project. For mine i have decided to make my 90' LS into a car that can do the 1/8th of a mile in 8.5 seconds or less. The problem is its not gonna be cheap, so I am looking for the most cost effective way to accomplish my goal. I want to do it right, but stay relatively inexpensive also. The ideas I have been throwing around are B16 swap, and turbo, but recently i have been thinking about building my B18A and turbo. Please suggest any ideas, because i dont know what the best idea is.

What does an 8.5 second 1/8mile equate to in a quarter mile?
It would seem to be that simply a turbo itself should be good enough granted the motor is in good shape.

b18 + intercooled turbo + head studs + 18lbs of b00st
how many miles on the engine, get a compression test done to see if you have any leakage or blow by. more info you give us the more we can help you make the honor roll

yeah thats what im thinking now. i've been reading about the B16a on here and people are saying its not that much better than my B18A. So i'll probley build it and turbo. How strong are the stock sleeves in b18a's?
You said cost effective. Either way you look at it. It would seem that you are going to rebuild the motor. But if its in good mechanical condition, it probably doesn't "NEED" to be done. 8.5 in the 1/8 mile is easy on a stock ls with n2o. A turbo is gonna cost a lot more. On top of the rebuild costs. Thats not going to be cost effective. Nitrous is the most cost effective way to go fast. I'm just trying to help. I was looking at price not how fast its gonna go.
I guess im just not a big fan of nitrous. From the things i've always heard it just tears your motor up. I gotta do some mechanical work for this project, because in my project proposal i said i wanted to learn more about the mechanics of the engine. How big a shot would i take to do the 8th in 8.5 anyway?
nitrous doesnt tear up the motor its only dumb people who use nitrous who tear up there motors. I've known people run nitrous on a regular basis even on there daily drivers and there motors were find. Though you have 182k on it you'll probably need to beef it up a littl bit but the most cost effective way would be nitrous...so forget the myths you've heard, thats only coming from people who just spray the **** out of it and don't use it properly

I agree keep your motor its in good condition/ add to and turbo and get it got it good!

If you want complete cost effective do this:
**** rebuilding your motor.. That can cost more than you think, and youll have downtime.
Go to a junkyard or off ebay and get a ls engine with low miles. They are a dime a dozen, and you can get them cheap.
So if you find one with 40 or 50k you can boost right off the bat on it and still have "healthy" engine.
Of course, we all would love a built engine, but if your on a budget, thats what i would do. Get a good low mileage ls engine, and put your turbo on that.
