I had just started paying attention to F1 and we had just got cable television. In the Seattle area, that meant CBC coverage of GP races - only Monaco got any regular coverage on US networks at the time. I watched that race and it was this brawl that sealed the deal for me.
I've got Arnoux's autograph on a Caeser's Palace postcard from the event in Vegas a few years later.
Cars of that era were really fun to watch because they had oodles of power, lots of drag (look at the size of those rear meats), and not a lot of stick. They were unfortunately also pretty lethal. I can remember reading back issues of R&T the year after that at my university library, being amazed that F1 drivers were getting killed at a rate of several per year through the '70s...

Now it's just a moving car show. I miss the good ol' days.
I pray that new rules will make it fun to watch again because I think every race I watched last season I slept through. Thank goodness I have a vcr!

that just brought back quite a flood of memories for me. I was only 8 at the time, and we were sitting in the living room at my grand parents for the weekly sunday ritual of the F1 or Moto GP. My mother was there, my uncle, and my grand parents. At the end of that race we were ALL standing up and screaming at the TV! Which never, ever happens in our family. It is an incredible memory that this video brought back. Thanks Jon. The folowing X-mas, I asked for and recieved my first Scalextric (sp?) slot car track. A figure 8 with one Ferrari, and one Renault.
Slice of life.

I read that and the Villeneuve biography over the summer when I was working third shift. The Villeneuve book is nothing short of amazing.

It should be easy to remember the French Grand Prix of 1979 at Dijon, France for the first victory of a turbo-charged engine aboard a Renault driven by Jean-Pierre Jabouille. This victory was almost overridden by the fantastic challenge for second position between Gilles Villeneuve and René Arnoux. For the last three laps of the race, they passed one another, they pushed and shoved, even touched, for a grandiose spectacle never repeated since. For history`s sake, remember that Gilles finished second...

OH MY GOD!
Now that is racing between two drivers with skills most of us only dream of!
Oh yeah, I agree with .RJ:get rid of the driver aids and bring back turbos.
*wonders if F1 will ever return to this level of competition*
