Registering a street/track car with no airbag
Well I am contemplating build up a car for NASA RallySport and had a quick question I thought someone may be able to answer concerning airbags. According to NASA rules, the car must remailn licensed for the street for transits to other stages. Well In Mass., we have inspections, and I know a rally prepped car will not pass inspection with no airbag, so what is someone to do? I called the registry and they said no way they would inspect a car with no airbag, let alone with fixed back seats, a cage, and non-factory seatbelts. The reason they give is that airbags are federally mandated and cannot be tampered with. I would just have it inspected then prep the car, but inspections are every year! Poking around on the NTSB site, I have found an application to send in for disabling the airbag, but it is for medical conditions only. Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? *sigh* I can't believe Uncle Sam is in charge of whether or not I can remove a pyrotechnic device from my car
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks guys!

Stock seatbelts remain... it is not a federal mandate not to tamper w/ SRS systems.

I think you just have to say the airbag was deployed for some reason. You are not required to replace it once it has been deployed.
OK thanks guys. The guys @ the Registry are focking ***** about this stuff...*sigh* Cali emissions sucks
Is there not a airbag 'plug' that you can't just unplug. On the cibic there's a nice little yellow plug right under the steering column that I unplug before going on track.
Doesn't NASA allow certain bolt-in roll cages?
Or better yet, get an aftermarket steering wheel and cut the wires to your airbag warning light. Whenever inspection time comes around, plop your old steering wheel back on. How would they know it's not plugged in?
