is it a ticking or a kind of rubbing sound? when i put my stage1s and gears in and left the timimg belt cover off the belt would rub against something i cant quite remember what. it was pretty noticeable though. once i put the cover back on the sound seemed to go away. so i am not sure if your car is ticking or rubbing but if you didnt put the timimg belt cover back on check right by the belt when the car is running to see if you hear any rubbing. Hope this helps and good luck.

i had a slight whirring sound. try probing a screwdriver around different parts of the head and listen to the other end of it, to see if you can get a better idea of where its coming from.

Does the sound get progressivly louder as the rpm's climb? are you sure it is the valves. Could it be a spun rod bearing?

OK is this a test? Loud ticking like a diesel, hmmm could it be that you are dieseling? Knocking? Detonating? Is your timing off?

Hopefully this guy is wrong, but do you know what detonation sounds like?? Mine was the same-way before I got my motor tuned and running correctly.
How loud is it really?

I feel i know a lot about cars.. i know it is the vavle train.. not detonation..... but what i am wondering is... what gets warn down on the valve traing to make it tick loud during idle... i remeember when i had them in tight tolerance... i couldn;t hear the dam thing run ... now... in fear of the vavles not closing al the way.. i adjusted them in the middle of the 2 tollerances.. i thnk like .007 and .009 or what ever...

I had a problem in my excursion with a ticking at certian lower rpms and it turns out I spund 3 bearings. But the truck never quit or lost oil pressure. I think I drove it for 5k before I even decided to look into it.

Yo cueballsi, if you were running your valve lash at the minimum spec. you're absolutely fine. I've heard of people going even tighter than that, so no worries.

It could be your injectors... I had a ticking noise, did a valve adjustment. Still had it. I knew i had good compression because i did it not too long ago. Did the screwdriver thing. Found out my injectors were the ones tht were making that loud ticking noise. Screwdriver trick is great

That's what I wsa thinking. Injectors can be some noisy suckers when they're dirty.

if I wanted to check to see if I was spinning, or had spun a bearing, How would I go about it? Drop the oil pan and look for?

Chunks, lol.

To see if you have a leaky injector you can remove the spark plugs and crank the engine, gas willl spew from the faulty injector plug hole. Make sense?

Drop the oil pan and the windage tray and see if you can see anything abnormal around the rod bearings. When i have replaced spun bearings, they mostly appear to have been mushed, and will have a thin like buildup between the rod and the crank. Like a very thin piece of metal. Also look for material in your oil pan after draining the oil.

Yea just pull the pan down and the wind tray. I would even pull the caps off the rods and mains while you were under there. That is if you don't see anything in the oil pan or the oil itself. If you are going to take the pan off what is one more step to be 100% sure if its the bearings, just make sure you retorque to specks. Only do one bearing at a time so you dont mix up the caps or nothing falls out.

Not trying to attack you or anything, but show me where an over head cam engine has lifters?

Lost motion assemblies act like lifters, they keep the vtec rocker quiet until it's being used. Sometimes they stick slightly

It happened to me on my B16, replaced it and no more noise.
