Default damn tranny shop

So AAMCO wants to charge me 650 to take the trany out open it up and just look at it. $650 holy **** just for labor. So I am not even going to let them touch it. I was wondering if I have a bad synchro and a leak should I just get a new tranny or rebuild it at a performance shop with a little extra labor costs that charges half of what aamco does?

i would take that 650 and buy a b16 tranny, plus some left over, or save up a little more and splurge on the type r with the lsd.

That's actually about right for a shop. Transmission work is considered a "specialized" service. It's likely to be pretty pricey.

I'd say either:
1. Get a bunch of buddies and a Helms manual, and try to remove the transmission yourself. Then bring it to a transmission shop. Labor will be reduced dramatically.
2. Take the $650 you would have spent and just buy a used transmission. If you're lucky, you can find a B16 for that price. GSR's should be able to be found as well. And you could probably buy two LS trannys for that price. Keep in mind, these are the prices of fully working used transmissions too.
3. Keep trying to find another shop. The price will hover around there, however.

Good luck.
