CRX Dying, need help badly-Popping & Wont Crank
Hey guys. I need some help. On my way to grab some lunch today, I was following my mom and something happened to my CRX. We were cruising about 40 and I shifted into 4th and slowly accelerated. All of a sudden I hear like 20 backfires out my muffler and the car cuts off. I pull over to the side of the road, and the battery and oil lights come on. I check the oil religiously, and it's still full. I dont know what's going on. The ECU isn't throwing any codes, so I cant tell by that. When I try to crank it, it turns over and right as it starts to fire...more backfires and it goes off again. It's a 90 CRX Si w/B16A1 in it. I have never had this happen before, and am really scared. Can anyone help?

That just happened to mine too. I was driving on the freeway and I didn't hear backfire but I heard a loud pop and smoke started to come out of my tailpipe.
Now when I try to start it up it won't turn over all the way it just dies right when it is about to start, and it has been backfireing when I try to start it.

So...any ideas? I wanna get this thing back up before tonight so I can go cruisin....any help plz guys
same thing happen to me!!!! check your Rotor inside the distributor cap! the screw must be loose and it doesn't turn along with the cams.. that's why it's backfiring.. hope this help!
I took the cap off, and the screw for the rotor had fallen out. It was just spinning freely when I did it with my finger. I got the screw and put it back in. It's tight now, however the same thing is still happening... It will turn and turn and turn and then pop, but wont start...any other suggestions?
how would i tell if it skipped teeth or not? Since the screw popped out of the rotor in the dis cap, do I have to put it back exactly how it came out... I mean, the rotor rod has a hole all the way through it for a screw. If I put the rotor end back 180 degress than what it was before, would that mess with it, or does it make a difference?

ahhh, ****, sorry, I missed reading that, forget the timing belt. Ya, if you turn it 180, I think it should make a difference. Try it out.

whagkangmakulet & cottagecreep, thanks guys. I went back out and turned the rotor 180 and it cranked right up. Once again, disaster is avoided because of the helping hands of you guys here at honda-tech.com. This is the first real "fix" I have had to do to her so far, and it feels good to know that I can turn to you guys for help. Thank you for the quick replies and maybe I can return the favor in the future.
BTW, any of you cruisin O-Town tonight will see me in mah baby. Look for the white 90 CRX with dual exhaust being followed by a 92 Burgundy Eclipse.
Thanks again,
Jonathan
