Default Check Engine Light 90 CRX DX?

I recently bought another CRX, a 90 DX automatic with a ZC swap. Once in a while after 20 or 30 miles of driving (it seems to be) the CEL comes on and the car seems to downshift. I haven't pulled over to see what code was flashing because this happens out on the highway and I found that if I kick it into neutral and restart the car the problem goes away. Some times it won't happen again for a while and then it may happen 5 miles down the road.

Anyone run into this and/or have any suggestions? I'm not real familiar with automatic transmission but would this be the lock up control solenoid or something else? Thanks for any help.

best way is to check for codes. once the light comes on ...just drive until you get where you wanna go and pull over and check it out .

Thanks I'll see if I can do that next time I have her out. Hopefully I'll be in an area where I can pull over immediately, I'd hate to drive 65 after it downshifts on its own.

Anyone else?

havent had that problem but i might have something to help you out... maybe its like a manual when the synchros are out, it just poppes out of gear.. maybe you could find someone who has a auto tranny and swap them out for a day or so and see if that works. i know its a lot of work for something that might not fix it... what else happens to the car when the cel comes on? does it lose hp? sputter?

Thanks for the reply. It doesn't do it all the time....normally on longer road trips. What happens is it seems to downshift into a lower gear and then the check engine light comes on.
