Since NDRA and NHRA require engine diapers in the pro-classes, let's discuss what everyone is/plans to use.

RCI makes the cheapest universal kits ($250 for nylon sportsman one p/n#7809, for V8). The replacement pads are around $20. I see on RCI's site, they list a "compact" version p/n#7811, but don't show detail dimensions. Also, I haven't found anyone selling this model online.

We are planning to build our own 'box' and use the replacement pads. I may start with an aluminum version, and have it copied in carbon/kevlar later. I'd like to aviod going to a 'soft bag' type (ballistic nylon/kevlar), because it will be pretty close to our timing belt, pullies, flywheel, etc.

I haven't seen any of the ones that are currently be used on 4 cyl cars (except a quick glance at one of the Mopar cars). Anyone got pics of some setups?

 

do you "have to" run a diaper ? or can you get away with a catch tray ???? i know angela proudfoot had a diaper on her engine back at the etown nhra fall nationals. not sure what kind it was, but it was in need of "fitment" because it wasnt fitting properly at all.

here is a picture i found of her car from the event (if you look closely, you can see where the straps for the thing are way toooo long, and they are way up on the valvecover, **** maybe they even wrap around. (i believe this was a quick fix, as im thinking they put the diaper on at the event)

What is an engine diaper for, so you don't oil the track? I've never heard of anything like that, not a drag kinda guy.

 

It keeps parts from flying all over the track when the motor lets go...

An engine diaper is to retain engine fluids. The piece you are speaking of bolts over the engine, not under. Maybe if we ran nitro.

 

A proper one will do both i would imagine

Now, the big question... is it actually something that we are allowed to "home make", or is it something that must pass through tests, be commercially available, and SFI approved?

i belive it has to be SFI approved.

 

Taylor racing makes one for the honda guys Its not on their website but just give them a holler.-pdang

Have you guys run one before bambooluv? Do you happen to have any pics?

 

Ive never ran one and dont even have the pics But Im sure nfjohn will chime in and give some light on who all is running this piece.

 

Deist makes one for the Honda b engines. They already have the pattern and can have it to you in a couple weeks. They have to be SFI a good diaper will hold all the oil in the engine and any parts that might come flying out of the bottom if the engine comes apart.

I would say to call some of the companies that are making them and talk to them about what you have to do to have one made for your car. You might be able to make one out of some fabric on your own and send it to them as a pattern.

bambooluv ... be great to find out if the diaper clears moroso and z10 type oilpans and clears dry and wetsump setups ... anyone ?

Is this similar to why guys on drag bikes wear balistics chest plates? So when the piston comes flying up at them, they dont die? lol

I've seen it happen...not a pretty sight, guys get crazy hurt.

No, that would be a scatter shield around the transmission. So if the flywheel breaks it does not become a projectile missle.

The engine diaper is exactly what it sounds like, its a diaper for the engine. If your car throws a rod threw the oil pan, oil will get caught in the diaper and not all over the track.
