Default Please help me not sound like an idiot: need correct terminology for 87 CRXsi wiring harness

(The description of the actual harness I need help with is in the second to last paragaph if you want to skip the "backstory". I'd caution you that it's a tale filled with sadness and heartache, and I can't take any responsibility for any trauma it may cause you.)

So my CRX failed me a few months back, and I'd been just too busy to take a look at it. Originally, it had been stuttering ocassionally and once failed to start, but when it did run everything seemed pretty good. Then one day on the way to work it just died, and I couldn't do a thing with it after that. I went out and promptly bought an Explorer the next weekend, and that Monday all the gas companies conspired to raise their prices after hearing I'd purchased an SUV. They're all out to get me.

Anyways, now that I'd gotten back at it, it seemed like everything was all weird electrically. When turning it on sometimes a turn signal would start to blink, or the speakers would hum (even though the radio was off), the fuel pump would just keep running (that actually may be normal), etc. I tried pulling fuses, checking for obvious shorts, and so on till I got to checking the battery. The positive post was practically eaten away with corrosion, and when I pulled the battery I discovered that the seam along the top of the back side of it had split and leaked battery sauce all over everything underneath it.

Unfortunately, the only thing underneath it is a big fat wiring harness. I figure there's about a dozen wires coming in from the "top", and the plug itself is a white-color plastic (or used to be white anyways). The acid's eaten away about half of the plastic on the top plug, and the thing it plugs in to below (which comes out of the firewall from one direction and from the other side of the engine bay in the other) is pretty melty looking as well.

I'd imagine it's something major from the size and number of wires, as well as the having connections to the motor, starter, distributor, and other interesting but mysterious parts. By the way, this is a 1987 CRX si with a 1500-something-or-other SOHC fuel injected engine. (1500 jigawatts didn't sound right.) The whole connection that I feel needs to be replaced sits about four inches below and about three inches behind the battery tray, which is of course on the left side of the car if you're looking at it with the hood open. A flex hose that's probably about 3" diamater runs above it (level with but too far back from the battery to be effected by the leak) which, when moved, allows unobstructed access. I need to know what the term for this harness is, and most helpful would be a part number. I don't want the whole harness because after following a couple runs of the numerous bundled wires, I've decided it's going to be alot easier to just splice in new plugs on both the top and bottom. I don't expect to be able to get just the plugs with a couple inches of leader, I'm sure I'll need the whole harness, whatever it is.

Thanks alot for taking the time to read this, and after browsing this forum a bit I decided to register and ask because it sure looks like there are a lot of knowledgable people that frequent it. Not to put any pressure on anyone, or anything of course. But yes, I'm looking at you.

Josh

Wow, sounds great. It's sure to have whatever I need then, if this does in fact turn out to be the cause of my problems (and nothing else has gotten fried).

Apparently though honda-tech.com doesn't want me to try out Instant Messaging as part of my trial (permission denied) - I did find your email address, mind if I send you one?

This site teases me with your message in an IM, heh. I emailed you my MSN ID if you want to go that way, or perhaps maybe just email. Heck, we could even use that thing everyone used to communicate with in the old days... the.. umm... oh yeah - phone! Heh. Mail me with your preference, I can't do much either way until I get home in about an hour.

So, I couldn't sleep and I checked this thread, and now I think my question needs more illustration. This is from page 2 of the manual from Honda: http://www.honda.co.uk/owner/W...2.pdf

It's amazing how lack of sleep and color blindness can combine to help a person create something totally unintelligible. G'nite
