Wow! That does suck. You can even get a JDM b16a ref'd in CA .

they are legal in all states if they meet hte local emissions stnadards. i bet my cars would pass easily in vermont....with all jdm engines. hell i bet they would pass even with missing emissions components too.

jdm engines can pass the sniffer anywhere. its the visual thatll give you problems..

p.s. youre sig is wrong, VTEC & Turbo arent meant for each other.

Skivik;

Here in California, it's kind of a "trick in the wording"! (that really doesn't read well)

Engine swaps are legal and as an example, it would be allowable to install a 94 Del Sol B16 engine in a 89 civic. Once done, a JDM b16 engine would be considered a "replacement" engine. You would still have to retain all the USDM related smog equipment.

So, the question you should ask your smog guys is if it's legal to use a JDM engine as a REPLACEMENT for a similar worn-out USDM engine if all smog equipment is retained.

Wes (Calif ref'd B18c in 89 civic) Vann

im going to sit here and ask you how many pros race with nonvtec turbo.
it may not be as efficient as it COULD be but it is definietly better than nonvtec

I dont know how many pro's race with nonvtec turbo. I dont have to know that to know the basics behind why a turbo doesnt a like a ton of overlap, and thats what VTEC (designed for high output NA applications) was made for.

Its not an opinion, and by no means am i hating on turbo'ed VTEC engines, but its a fact that cams with alot of overlap dont perform as well with turbo as they do w/ NA setups. Why do you think companies make specific grinds just for turbo applications...

theres these things they sell call adjustable cam gears, they allow you to change the overlap of the cams. look into them.

And wouldnt u think when the TURBO cams are ground for a VTEC motor that all of the above would be taken into consideration???
