Default Econotig vs. Syncrowave

is there a whole lot of difference between the Econotig and Syncrowave 180? just looking on ebay brand new they are about $1200 for the Econotig and $1600 for the Syncrowave. is the Syncro worth the extra $400? they also have a few used Econos for around $800. i just cant justify spending $1600 for a welder i wouldnt use a whole lot. i mainly want to try to see if i can make a manifold. i am taking classes with tig right now and i got the hang of it right away and can lay a pretty nice bead. i'm not going to be welding anything really big. just tubing and maybe some 1/8" flat stock, possibly 1/4" flat. i have a mig welder also if i need it. so can you guys give your opinions on the Econotig or other similar machines (i would like a good name as in miller, lincoln, hobart, esab)?

btw - i dont know what all the features mean on tigs since i'm kinda new with it. i've done it for a total of about 5 hours and just basically went by what my instructor set the machine too, although i have messed with some. the machine i use at class is a miller 350

I'm in a similar situation so id like to hear some more opinions. From what ive read the Econotig doesnt weld as nicely and is crappy doing thinner or thicker matierials and i should just sack up and buy the Syncrowave 180.

EDIT: this is what the PM was aboot

I had an EconoTig (first gen) and I had trouble at the low end, as in, it won't go to a low enough current before cutting off. It made it all but impossible (for me) to weld thin sheet. The higher priced units are able to control the current down to a lower limit, better for thin sheet. At the high end it was fine.

I love my econotig, works fine for everything I need Picked it up super cheap 2 years old from a welding/fabrication shop. To anybody who says that it doesn't weld as nice as some other machine, you don't know what your talking about.

well i think i am going to go with the Econotig. the best price i have seen so far is $1237 shipped on ebay for it brand new. anyone know where i can get it cheaper? or anyone have a used machine similar in quality that they are selling?

or should i go with the Syncrowave 180 for $1467 shipped from ebay brand new?

Have you looked local? Ive been looking at Tig welders for a while and the thing i like the best about local shops is most let you test the welder before you buy it . Im really looking into buying this welder http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...&rd=1

Ya I would definately go local. When I got my Hobart I shopped around and got it locally for maybe $35 more than Ebay, and they threw in some consumables like tips and a spool of wire. Plus a local welding shop is just cool

For the difference in money go with the syncrowave. I bought my econotig used for 1000 canadian, at that time about $770 bux USD. If i was buying new i'd definatly get the squarewave machine!

What kinda of electrical work would one have to do at home to run a Syncrowave 180.

Any machine that runs off of 220v will run at your house. Basically, you just pull 2 wires off breakers in your fuse panel, whereas your typical electrical outlet pulls 1. It's just like wiring in a stove.

Many of the newer machines like the Dynasty will run off of virtually any power you will run into, either at home or in industry.
