A long time ago, SSR used to make a '98-spec R 16" rim lookalike. I don't see it in the current line-up at Tire Rack, but I do remember it.

that's why they invented lug adapters! besides i would be more than willing to bet most of the tegs could use a good spacing on the wheels to bring the wheel to the edge of the fender

Not really very safe, especially a 4 to 5 lug adapter if that exists (the geometries of a 4 and 5 lug bolt circle on top of each other would put at least one or maybe 2 of the holes way too close together for my comfort).
Not to mention they would have to be very thick to be able to get a lugnut into the adapter onto the stock studs, and then have another stud sticking out from that. I know my 16x7 wheels would hit the fenders if they were only 10mm farther out, maybe even less than that, so any kind of lug adapter would definitely be a no-go on my car.
