Which is really better?
I searched and searched to find out which tranny would be best for my SOHC turbo. Right now i have the dx tranny in it and it seems like 3 gear never ends. Im running 10psi on a 45 trim t3. Adam aka Bailhatch made my kit and it pulls very good in 1st and 2nd gear but at the top of 3rd gear it seems like it doesnt pull as hard as well as in 4th gear.
I am waiting for my bends to make my 3 inch exhaust, right now im stuck with the stock exhaust. I know the stock exhaust is hurting me but i think the dx tranny is also hurting me. I searched and found that every post about a dx tranny versus si had posts about each tranny being the best. Some people argued that the longer gears were the best for boost. I dont think that is true but i want to know exactly how much better an si tranny would be over a dx. The cheapest tranny i can find here in Maine is 350 bucks.
Does anyone have any time slips of a d16z6 with a dx tranny and then the same car with a si tranny? I am wondering if the change from a dx to si tranny is even noticable and if so how much. Is it like 1 or 2 tenths or are we talking like a 1/2 of second in the quarter mile?
So all in all i want to know which is hurting me worse, the stock exhaust or the dx tranny or are they both killing me? How much better will my car pull and feel with a si tranny and 3 inch exhaust? I had a turbod focus with 3 inch exhaust so i never have driven a turbo car with a stock exhaust before i so i dont know what it feels like. Lets have your opinions.

92-95 EX/Si tranny
96-00 EX tranny
ive heard tell of the 96-00 tranny being better because of its syncros.... otherwise they are identicle

you would be better of going with the shorter geared tranny, long geared trannys are good for higher torque cars that cant get traction
in the quarter mile you would probably see gains of 3-4 tenths if traction is not a problem
you may want to go with the exhaust first as it may be just as pleasing

if you get short gears you run into the chance of having to shift into 5th gear on the track, unless you run large tires. otherwise, the DX trans will hold up to what youve got. the DX trans is probably what i would go with for long hauls and what not. if youre gonna want to play on the streets, and on the track, get the ex trans. its quick geared.
money isnt really an issue, i have my exhaust waiting to put it on. I have a built a6 block with a z6 head with the dx tranny. Im getting a t3/to4e next month and hoping for around 300-350whp. 1st and 2nd gear pull real hard but 3rd and 4th dont pull as hard as my friends z6 with an si tranny. We are both running a 50 trim t3. We have the exact same setup except he has the si tranny and 2.5 inch exhaust. He also tuned them both with uberdata. It just feels like it stops pulling midway into 3rd and midway into 4th. Would the tranny be to blame for this or the exhaust or both? Other than that the car runs great.

i would probably upgrade your exhaust before your your tranny.(this is my opinion, because i have had boosted sohc's and i had to put my stock exhaust on for a day because of a ticket and you could definetely tell it was constricting the car) i would also upgrade the tranny too though. for the $150 it is a good upgrade
Switching from a y7 to y8 tranny made the world of a difference.. I don't think there's ANY better mod to a y7 than switching to the y8 tranny. You can DEFINITELY feel a difference.. i'd say atleast a .5 less time in the 1/4

I thought that the difference between the two was the d16y8 tranny has an aluminum shift fork the bends instead of breaking off like the d16z6's. I could be wrong though...

You are right. The synchronizers has nothing to do with why the 96-00 unit is better than the 92-95 one.
