Default Installed OBX Cam in my MiniMe ;)

Hows everyone doing today?

Anyway last week I installed the D16z6 OBX cam in my minime. Now before you all start spouting off that OBX sucks, I did some research and found out they are physically identical to Skunk2's cams. I was very surprised and just couldn't pass it up for the price. They are indeed replica's of Skunk2's. The lift and duration are IN 0.470, 240 EX 0.445, 240.

The install went very smoothly and was actually fun. Removing the cam from a D series is very easy, even easier than a DOHC. The rocker arm assembly and cam caps are all one unit. I had no problem removing the rocker arm assembly and I did it by myself too, nothing fell apart like some people warned. Remove the dizzy and slide the timing belt off and the cam is free.

After the head was back together(torqued to spec of course ) I did a valve adjustment, seting it to the tighter side of spec (IN.007, EX.009), I than set the igntion timing with my timing light and reset the ecu. Before starting the motor I did an oil change with some nice Castrol Syntec. When checking the oil it's so clean you can barely see it.

Now upon start up the first thing I noticed was that the motor ticks very loud, but it idled perfectly, very smooth. The ticking is noticeable though even with the hood closed. But upon acceleration the engine has much more of a growl to it and the VTEC engagement sounds very similar to a DOHC, it's very apparent when VTEC engages, unlike stock. The midrange feels stronger and the the top end is much stronger, it actually pulls when VTEC engages now.

I'm happy with my purchase and I think it's a great bang for the buck, just hopefully it doesn't break on me . The D16 is a lot more fun to drive now. I find myself engaging VTEC often now, it's addicting lol. If anyone needs help installing a cam in a D, pm me and I will help you out.

Heres some pics:

The next project is BOOST!

I have a JDM B16a sitting in my garage but I think I'm going to have some fun with the D first, or maybe sell the B, we will see. If anyone wants a B16a with a p&p and milled head, let me know.

I'd be interested in seeing a before/after dyno on these. I had the Skunk2 S1 SOHC cam for a bit, and that ************ made my engine sound like a diesel. Idled perfectly, though, and sounded GREAT in VTEC x-over. So if this cam is similar to Skunk2's, I don't doubt your claims. My cam was taken out due to an unhealthy motor, though. Sold it and my adjustable cam gear to somewhere here on H-T.

The specifications on the camshaft grind could be identical to Skunk2, but how is the quality? You don't want to take a shortcut for the price only to have the camshaft grenade on you at 7,000 RPM.

One thing you gotta remember about companies like OBX, is they dont actually build the stuff, they contract smaller (I guess they could be larger) companies to make the stuff for them and then they put their stamp on the parts and sell them. So the turbo manifold they sell may not be made by the same people who build their cams for them.

that loud clicking is your valves i suggest not driving your car anymore until you do a valve adjustment.........you should never put cams in your car and not do a valve adjustment..........also i think wny stage 2s you have to upgrade your valvetrain........
