'88 Civic hatchback base model...speaker/head unit swap w/newer honda OEM parts?
Hi, I picked up an '88 Civic hatch, and both front speakers are shot. In the past w/my Subarus and my grandparent's Camry, I have been able to buy a factory head unit and/or speakers from a newer model, that plugs right up w/zero wiring.
Can anybody tell me what years and model of Honda's I can swap headunits and/or front speakers with and have it all be plug and play?
Thanks!
Mark

To clarify, on Subaru's, any '95+ Subaru can recieve a WRX 6 disc changer head unit...it plugs right up.
And on my grandparent's '91 Camry, I used a head unit from a '97 Tacoma, and it plugged right up.
So I'm looking for the exact same situation, except now for my '88 Honda Civic. There's gotta be a Honda guru on here, who knows these kinds of details, the way I know Subaru details.:D
Thanks in advance!

i've got the head unit out of a '93 accord in my '90 civic.
i think most will work as long as they use the same plug on the back...

Right, but the question is, which models and year range have the same plug?
Elsewhere I've learned that all '86-97 Hondas have that same plug, and some '98's...anyone w/further details, feel free to chime in!

You got it. I think there were a few single DIN CD stereos that were in Preludes, as well as the tape decks from Accords that work with an Alpine or Honda CD changer. The Civic stereos from '92 on are not DIN sized, so they won't work. The front speakers are simply 6.5" round, and any aftermarket speaker will be MUCH better than the OEM Honda ones. Speakers with larger magnets may require you trim the speaker buckets, but that is pretty easy and only takes a few minutes.

you could put a stock honda deck in your car but imo you're better off getting an aftermarket deck.
Aftermarket decks come with more options and have higher outputs and are better in almost all aspects. you can pick up a decent deck for just over $100 while most stock decks are not that cheap.

I'm looking for an ebay $20-30 factory head unit...I spent $650 on this car, so its not getting anything special. Only having AM/FM is killing me, though.
Hmm...I do have a set of MB Quart 5.25's and 6.5's laying around...I hate to put either one in the Civic, though. Any 6.5's will plug right up? I've never done car audio, is it just a power and ground game to throw in aftermarket speakers? If so I wonder if my WRX's factory speakers would even fit...
Thanks for the info so far, keep it coming!

The Honda's that came w/CD changers...what year are they? There's a boatload of the Honda Factory CD changers on ebay, I'm curious what year head units they mate up to?
97 and under Hondas basically all used the same plug style. So if you get a headunit it should be from a 97 or older model and it SHOULD plug right in to your existing harness.
98+ used this other style plug:

and if not you can get a cd head unit from a 98+ accord and a 99+ civic etc and get both a female plug for the car side and a male plug for the deck side and wire them together so you can plug in a newer deck into the older car. I have the oem cd player from my 2000 si in my 91 but the harness was all cut to **** in the car so I just hard wired a new male harness in for the newer style decks. Best of all, it was free cause i already had the cd player sitting around!
