I am so done, need your help regarding tires ASAP
I have pirelli tires, model # P7000, 225/45/17, on the car. One of the tires has a
small hole in the freaking side wall, no way of repairing or is there a way? The
tires is only five month old, WTF. So I call TireRack.com for a replacement and
guess what, the P7000 has been discontinued--great move pirelli!!
Where else can I look for a replacement? I already tried E-Bay and
Discountire.com with no luck.
Thanks!!!!

i worked at Firestone, if the hole is in the sidewall you cant repair it. its like putting a bandaid on your knuckle, itll come off. if you like i can send you a discount card from Firestone, you would basically get the employee discount and pay 10% above cost for the tires

side wall damage are non-repairable. Dont argue.
it's not repairable by the nature of it's design.
if you have a chance to look at the contruction of the Passenger "R" type of tires you'll get what i am saying.
since the piece you have is junk, replacement would be your best bet.
call them couple more time and see if they can squeeze out the closest price replacement.

Cool guys, I will go ahead and buy just one pair of other tire brand, can't afford to replace all four at once.

I am surprise the shop would do that, it must be some run-down shady place with no ASE cert. program at all.
well, unless your sisters' boyfriend is driving a semi(bias-belted, diagonal bias tires)

in California its actually against the law to plug tires at all (shops still do it, esp. gas stations) because of the fact that on long trips air leaks, and when the PSI gets too low........BAM *ROLL *TUMBLE *ROLL , you get a blowout. At my shop we would plug and patch, thats the best way

Then don't offer advice if you don't know what you're talking about; plain and simple. (trying to not sound like a dick)
I would call tirerack and see what is a direct replacement for the tire, pirelli or not; and see if tirerack can work with you on the price

Well, after wrenching for over 30 years, I can say you CAN patch a sidewall. You cannot use a plug, but you CAN use a patch from the inside and it does hold and is effective. Looks like a bicycle tube patch. However, it is only good on small punctures, no large holes or tears.
If you want a replacment, try:

I had Kuhmo's before and like them a lot. What do you guys think about the ECTSA Supra 712. Are they a good buy?

we never really practiced that at our shop, too much of a liability. But that's just me

There is just WAY too big of a liability to patching a sidewall. You CAN patch a sidewall, but then again you CAN jump off a five story building, neither of the aforementionned being good ideas of course.
The rule we use is the rule of thumb, if the hole in question is in, or within one thumb width of the sidewall, we refuse to fix it. Simple as that, the customer can either ride on a donut or buy a new tire.
I mean really, look at it from a shops perspective: We patch a a hole in a sidewall for a customer. Said custom (we'll call him Bob) goes out on the highway and the patch blows on him. Bob freaks and loses control of his car, smashes into some other people before coming to a fatal stop.
Now when the authorities investigate what happened, and they find out that said shop (eg: Jim's automotive) patched the sidewall of a tire on Bob's car; and even worse, when they find out this was the cause of the accident...Well let's just say Jim's auto is going to have their hands full.
I know the scenario seems far fetched, but all it would take is one incident like that to bankrupt a shop.

wow...one thumb....that's brave....
we always said that if it is outsid ethe outermost rain channel, no-can-do, and when we do patch tires, we use a patch-plug combo, just to be safe

Well obviously you use your good judgement. Like I said 1 thumb = no patch+plug no matter what, but beyond that it's up to each idivudual tech to use his good judgement and discretion.
