Default Spec B's installed... have some questions..

After owning them for over 2 years, Dave and I finally installed the Spec B's this weekend. Everything went great and the car started up on the first try and idled with no problems right around 750 rpm.

My problem is there is a weird noise coming from the motor, kind of like a wowowowow. Dave thinks its the over lap of the cams, but i'm not possitive and wanted a second opinion. Could the belt be to tight and the tensioner is making noises? I'm going to get a mic at work tomorrow so I can record the sound, untill then i've taken some pictures to try and help out.

This is what we replaced
- Water pump
- Timing belt
- prelude injectors
- toda valve springs
- toda spec b's

I've also got a jdm header and a modified stock intake box with a comptech foam filter.

The plugs

Notice the belt doesn't sit center on the cam gears

The amount I can twist the belt on the exhaust side

The amount I can twist the belt on the intake side

Also my vafc settings if they'll help. Yes I know that every car is different and I need to get it tuned on a dyno. But i don't have the time or money right now to have it done so I just want it to be rich for now and don't care about power.

Remember I have prelude injectors 290cc

Intake cam is advanced 2 degrees. Exhaust cam is 0

i'm having the same noises with mine to...wowowowowow

it's the timing belt, it's too tight
i couldn't do mine to factor settings cause the belt would jump some teeth on startup

Yeah we had the same problem when we were trying to tension the belt, it kept jumping teeth when we tried to rotate the crank. We evently stuck a screw driver under the tensioner and pryed it against the frame so it would be tight.

So you're just running with it really tight? For how long have you had it on there tight (making that noise)?

I've had it like this for about 2 weeks now
it's not super tight, but its tighter than factory specs thats for sure
i'll take some pics of the deflection when it stops raining

btw, you have to check the timing belt alot more for wear because it's tighter than factory. I'm using a toda belt

when your tensioning the belt, you should have the belt on the exhaust site be taut, and the intake side should be slack

it will allow you to get it Tight

We tried doing it how the helms says to do it, but the toda springs are so tight that the cams don't want to rotate very well. So when you lossen the tension and tighten it again, then rotate the engine 5-6 times, it'll jump teeth as soon as you try.

uhh, no. I bet he's running in the 10:1 a/f ratio.....

Try to lean it out a bit up top. If you just want to play it safe, at least zero out the wot map... too rich man!

Bigg *** cams always sound grumbly "if you know what i mean"

.....but i would be willing to bet that the noise is from the belt as stated above!

I had the same issues when I had JUN IIIs and using the power enterprises/Toda timing belt. If i tensioned it to stock, the belt would skip teeth, It had to be tightened more and it made the same noise, the best you can do is just keep an eye on it, that belt should last awhile though

Curious as to the final conclusion. One guy claims his motor "a'sloded", others say to just check the belt often. I am getting ready for some SK2St2's soon, and am now fearing this experience as well.

Are there any Solid and Proven answers ?? Is it harmful or dangerous to the motor to have the belt making this sound??

My belt makes the same noise, had it changed by Yack a while back. He said he intentionally overtightens a bit and the noise is normal

I would adjust the VAFC setting no higher than +15. For some reason the VAFC does not work properly if you set it past +15, - works. This happened with my car and several of my friends. Install was fine but the car would not run properly with the setting past +15.
