Default Speakers + nasty sound

I installed some good 6.5" pioneers (TS-A1780R) and kept an old pioneer HU in there. Played this horrible sound, kinda scratchy, when balence was distro'd to all 4 speakers. This would happen randomly, during cold start...never could figure out the pattern. Thought it might be a power problem, so I threw it into the rear 2. Problem solved....but less volume! Installed 2 W3s (which is unrelated) so I decided to pick up a new HU, Dual (XDM6810) and thought if it was a power problem with the HU underpowering, things would be solved. Nope! I've talked to many knowledgeable car audio guys, and they can diagnose it, but can't solve it. I'm very reluctant to hit Tweeter because they charge an arm & a leg with a BJ on the side. I'm thinking a 4-channel external amp MAY work, connecting each speaker to each one of the channels, but I have a friend who has the exact HU and same speakers (different dimentions) and he has NO problems. I'm scratching my head over this so much it's starting to blister! AHH

If any of you all know, lemme know...thanks so much
Jim

yeah too me that sounds like the HU not copping with the wattage of the speakers, get a amp and play the speakers straight off the amp rather than the HU. But thats only a suggestion.

Alright, so it looks like I was on the right track. I think both of you have the right idea, so once I get a few paychex (ACK!) I'll buy some of that in no time. Thanks for your help.
