any ideas why i keep throwing a CEL
well every once in awhile, mainly when its hot out, my car keeps throwing a CEL? do you think that my oil would have anything to do with this. its not low , cause i already cheked it. im running mobil 1 5w - 30 . its a 99 GSR. it doesnt happen all the time though. its just once in awhile. any ideas would be great!!!
First of all, you have to tell us what CEL you are getting. There is a sticky post on the top of this forum that tells you how to check for codes, as well as what codes they are.
Get back to us and tell us what CEL code you are getting.
For example, after jumping the ECU clip, if the CEL light blinks slowly 4 times and then fast 7 times, you will have a Code #47
Slow blinks = first digit
Fast blinks = second digit

Yes, you will get "jacked" if you let Acura look at it. They will probably charge you their rediculous labor rates of $100+ an hour just to check that. It will take approximately 2 minutes to do, yet they will charge you the full hour.
Just tell your step dad how to do it. Walk him through it using the links on honda-tech. It's very easy.
1. Remove passenger side kick plate panel. There should be a clip holding it in. Unscrew the "expanding" screw and just pull the panel off. Now that I think of it, I'm not even sure you need to remove the panel. Maybe you do if the plug's never been touched before.
2. Look up and you will see a little blue (or is it green?) plug that's not plugged into anything. It might be shoved into a rubber boot thing. Just pull it off. It has two connectors in it.
3. With the engine off, unbend a paper clip and stick each end of it into the two connectors. This way you are connecting the two contact points.
4. Turn the key onto the ON position, but do not start the car.
5. Count the number of times the CEL light blinks.
The CEL light will blink fast and then slow.
The number of times it blinks fast = first digit
The number of times it blinks slow = second digit
For example, 8 fast blinks followed by 4 slow blinks. That is a CEL code #84
Keep in mind, you might have several codes that come up. If so, it'll blink fast again, and then slow. But this time it'll be different from the first.
For example, 8 fast blinks followed by 4 slow blinks. [pause] Then 5 fast blinks followed by 3 slow blinks. [pause] Then 6 fast blinks followed by 2 slow blinks. (Yes, there will be a slight pause between each "set").
That is a CEL Code #84, #53, and #62 (Basically that means you have 3 CEL codes popping up).
Good luck. Don't take it to Acura for something so simple. If you have any more questions, post here and we'll help. Or even ask your step dad to post here and we can walk him through it.
