question on b18 timing
Ok. This question has more than likely been asked 100 times, but here goes:
I just finished putting an engine together and it is using an aftermarket(cheap ebay) crank pulley, the problem is that the pulley doesn't have any timing marks on it. Now the crank gear does have a mark about an 1/8" off to the side of the key stock that holds it into place. Is that mark tdc? Any info on this would be great. I have built a number of engines in the past , but always relied on the timing marks on the pulley.

It is actually pretty easy to fiqure out tdc. Remove the spark plug closest to your pulley because the piston under it has to be at tdc. use some long object, maybe your dipstick and stick it into where you removed the spark plug. Make sure is is touching your piston. Crank your pulley by hand, with a rachet ofcourse. while you do this watch the dipstick or whatever you have in there. You want to see the object go up. Once your piston is at tdc the object will go back down and when that happens you went to far. Just move the crank back a little and judge how much you need to go back. Watch very closely and maybe have a friend help. This is how mine timing is always done even though I have the pulley marks.
Good luck!!

best safest way is to line up the timing marks on the crank pulley and the timing marks on the cam gears

there is a mark on the crank gear.....just put it to the mark on the other mark on the oil pump and you are done...... i will see if i can find a picture...

take off the spark plug for the #1 cylinder, get a 19mm socket and turn the crank while looking down in the cylinder. You should see the piston once it up.
