Default quick question on rebuilding to stock specs

Just wondering what exactly is involved if I was to rebuild my engine back to stock specs. My scenario is that I'm pretty sure my rings are going (or gone rather!) and I was wondering what would be involved if I were to throw in a set of used pistons, rings and rods. Would a simple hone do the trick or would I have to get it bored out. WEll, I guess it depends on how much scarring has occured, but if it's pretty bad and I have to do a bore, would I be able to throw in a set of used pistons and rings? Can I get oversized stock rings? Anyway, just wondering and getting some ideas of alternatives to a full build up.

well you pretty much answered your question already. Won't know until you see how it looks when you pull it apart.

haha, I guess I did! haha, I guess I was just looking for confirmation and wanted to see if anyone else was in my shoes. I have been boosted for quite some time and I'm starting to see more smoke out at higher rpms so I'm assuming the rings are gone. I just want to know if anyone has been boosted and rebuilt their stock block to stock specs.

Pray that the cylinder walls are fine; they should be as long as the ring lands didn't break.

If the cylinder walls are fine, you can just toss a set of rods and pistons in there....but your stock ones SHOULD be fine. Replace the rings, set the end gap a little loose, and replace the gaskets and bearings while you're in there.

Voila! Stock rebuild!

You may want to go ahead and replace the valve stem seals, too, because it's usually a 50/50 chance on if the smoke's from the rings or seals.

now would cracked ringlands cause a decrease in compression or would broken ones cause this? I'm assuming broken ones, but with that being said, if the walls were scratched, I guess I the only way to tell would be to take off the head and have a look right?

Yup, you'll have to pull the head and pistons to check for broken ring lands.

A broken ring land would cause a loss of compression and a good bit of burning-oil smoke from the tailpipe. A compression test should tell you if it's something major like ring lands, though.

Yah, I did a compression test and my number were pretty low, but consistant across all the cylinders. WEll, I did a compression test and they were at about 175 or so across the board, and before I left for Korea, I did another compression test and I think it was my number 1 cylinder was at about a 145 so I'm pretty sure it was going or gone, so yah, I'll have to see when I get back, but if the walls are good still, I want to try and hone, throw in some pistons, some arp's and a heavy duty street clutch.

I've been inspired by firedrake's setup! hahaha
