I have a T61, use what I have or cut my losses?
I have a T61 .70/.84ar from Master Power. Quality is not my concern, so please don't comment on that (thanks). In all the research I do, everyone says it spools late. I want to know how late, "late" is. I would be happy getting full "street boost" of 15 psi by 5500rpm. This will be on a stock (unopened) 1st gen. B16a, log mani, 2.5" piping, and full exhuast.

I'm running a turbo thats around teh same specs but mine is ballbearing. full boost is at 4k. what are your goals? over the winter i'll be tunning for 450-500whp range w/ taht size turbo.
for ***** and giggles i put it on my stock b20 swap to see how it would do. ran 12.7 @ 110 on 8psi

Unfortunatly I have to set my goal at 350-400Hp which is what I believe the stock B16a can hadle with light mods. When I can build a block, I'll move my Hp goal up significantly. I know the T61 is a turbo that is used when making 500+ Hp, and am wondering if I should hold out and use this turbo or just get a smaller one until I can build a block. If I can get 15psi by 5500rpm I would be fine with this turbo.
Using a .84a/r t4 exhaust housing on a stock b16 will not be the greatest choice. Spool up would be pretty bad, cant really say exactly what rpm but i'm sure its high up there. I would ditch it and pick up a different turbo. A very popular turbo right now is the sc61/gts61. It could suit your 350/400 hp goal easily. Then if you plan on building your bottom end you could still use the same turbo. There are people making 600+ on this turbo.
I don't accept that it's "high up there." High up there is to broad of a statement to me and doesn't sound like there is any experence to back it up. I pretty much plan on using this turbo and am looking for someone that has some solid information that can persuade me not to. Otherwise I will find out the hard way, or be satisfied with what I get.

15psi by 5500 rpm's, you will be damn lucky if you get that with your turbo and a 1st gen b16a. I'd think 6000-6500rpm is a little more realistic. Run open downpipe and you have a better chance of meeting your goal

I'll tell you what when I used to have my T3 60-1 with a .82 a/r housing on a 84.5mm bore B16a I fully spooled that up at 5500.
Its gona be a lil tougher spooling up that turbo with a T4 exhaust side compared to mine, so I would definitely say that your looking at about 6200-6500rpm.

I figured it would be around 6000-6500, hoped it would be around 5500. Is this information from experience? Thanks

You can EASILY make 350-400hp on a stock B16 with the proper tuning and stiffer valve springs.

lets see all the dyno's? I know it can be done..i made over 300 on mine. But i don't think you can do 400 wiht stock compression and have it last...how do you know that its so easy? if your so knowledgable you wouldn't be asking why you bought a completely mismatched turbo

lets see all the dyno's? I know it can be done..i made over 300 on mine. But i don't think you can do 400 wiht stock compression and have it last...how do you know that its so easy? if your so knowledgable you wouldn't be asking why you bought a completely mismatched turbo
Don't sell it if you have bigger plans for the motor, you'll regret it later. Suggestion: find a junkyard t3(like a .63/.6) and use that until you build the motor. This way you don't have to buy another expensive new turbo, you still have the t61 for the future, and can have more fun on the street now on a budget.

You can do 400 having stock compression with correct tuning and race gas. This car is driven a lot, but is not my primary daily driver. I know that it is easy because I have 2 friends with those hp levels on stock bottem ends and no head porting. Because I'm knowagable doesn't mean I know everything, that is why I posted the question about the T61.

I turbo sized for 500hp and drag, I didn't just grab any ol' turbo. My 2 step and programable NO2 control would have taken care of any lag issues.

I have a T3 I might play with. Its .48ar on exhuast side. I wanted to have about 350hp though. That little thing will be a cork. Probably what I'll do is tune the T3 for as much power as I can get on 91octane and tune another map for the T61 and race gas.

i got a t61 and boost comes on hard as hell a 5500. but until 5500 its kinda dead. boost engagement is sick. more for the top end power.
if you have bigger plans in the future than go with the T61 and quit talking about it. The power you'll get is so much differnt than a small T3. I was at full boost at 4k from idle and from a stop. BUt from a roll in any gear boost was instant!.
I ran it in stock form and ran mid 12's on 8psi, Now i have a built LS going in and should be easy 10's and 450whp+ range. Best part about it i didnt have to waist money on 2 turbos because it ran GREAT in both situations!

I was out tuning the MR2 on the street at about midnight the night before the last race. The car was making a little over 700hp and could put it to the ground due to the help of some 26" ET Streets.....that was fast!

It doesn't seem to be very efficient under 15psi but very effecient at the upper boost levels. I would say its an uncommon turbo for having a unusual compressor wheel.
It has a small inducer and a relatively large major which shifts the effciency curve to the left. If I were to run 20psi only then it would be a nice turbo to use.
