Tranny Options: My sistuations-PLEASE INPUT!
Ok so Ive been building this b16(Hoping for 400whp turbo, street tuned probably 300whp) FOREVER and the tranny is the... well one of the last things left to do.
Keep in mind budget doesnt matter. I want reliability and performance. I guess money is kinda important I dont just want to throw it away for no reason.
1- My orginal plan was to use my JDM y1 w/LSD and rebuild this tranny. Everyone says that they make gear kits and syncro kits for these tyranny's but I have yet to find any (that I actually trust, not just because the shop found a USDM oem part that works). Upon rebuilding it I wanted to toss the oem LSD and throw in a Quaife unit and add my LS 5th gear since I had one laying around.
So option #1: use current JDM y1+rebuild(EVERYPEICE)+quaife
2- Now after getting a business license, and being concerned about reliability; I thought about just forking out the cash for a 92-93 ys1 BRAND new from Honda.. ERR Acura
(the GSR one boys not the LS) and then just adding the Quaife unit to that.
So option #2: Brand new from factory ys1 gsr tranny+Quaife
3- Since I have a YS1 tranny already(LS) I could just order all the guts for a YS1 (Gsr) and rebuild that tranny with GSR guts. No need to buy the whole tranny when I dont need the $400 stock differential. This would cost me the most labor/IOU's for friends help or shops.
So option #3: Brand ys1(gsr) guts in YS1(LS)Casing+Quaife
I dont want to half *** this. It would be nice to know that EVERY peice is brand new and ready to be ran hard on. I feel option #2is best but I have NO IDEA what the price difference is.
Keep in mind I could probably EASYLY sell the jdm tranny for $500 still and Im sure if I took the stock BRAND new ys1 differential out of the NEW tranny, someone on here or g2ic.com would jump on that quick.
So many thoughts/words/ideas I could go on forever. What do you guys think?
EDIT: Totally forgot. I have a 91 Teg=CABLE tranny. I dont want to convert to HYDRO either
sorry, thats a REAL important factor to leave out.

You should look into Gearspeed (,http://www.gear-speed.com/home.html) I've read they will completely rebuild your transmission (I'm sure they'll swap gears around etc at your request),CARBON COAT your syncros (which is supposed to make them super strong), and install an LSD (I'm pretty sure it's a Quaife) for around $2200........Not a bad deal considering your syncros become super strong and a Quaife by itself is usually a little over $800...........Here's a link to a thread that was on here not too long ago about them it got pretty in depth, check it out:https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=988266

I actually was thinking about that when i was posting this but i thought id just let it be brought up
any other thoughts
On other msg boards ive decided option 2 is probably the cheapest most reliable option and or the gear speed option now as well....

I don't know, I have a YS1 GSR tranny off of my 92 GSR, and it has one bad gear and a couple of shot synchros, and the parts alone (just 2 gear-sets and a synchro assembly was priced over $900 at cost from a friend of mine who worked at Honda at the time.........and that didn't include seals, bearings, or anything else.......For some reason they only sell certain synchros etc. in a gear-set which includes the gear, synchro, blocker ring, etc.......and are very expensive.............That's why I'm even leaning toward the GearSpeed rebuild down the road................Also, have you considerd trying to use a short final drive to shorten the gear ratios in the LS tranny...........And is it possible to use all of the GSR internals in the LS, I know they share the same code, but I have pictures of both (internal exploded view) and they look quite different......I ask because I am currently using a YSI LS tranny on my GSR and my LS housing is in better shape, so to be able to swap internals over would be convenient.............
Here is an update:
1. Acura does not sell COMPLETE YS1 gsr trannys.
2. the parts to rebuild a core YS1 gsr tranny is rediculous (even at my cost; parts+quiafe is more then the 2200 seen in #3).
3. type II from gear speed is 2200 shipped w/core 2700 shipped without a core.
My final thoughts:
Buy a Type II from them (the differential they use is Quiafe btw I asked) Pay the 2700 because of 1. downtime 2. i can easyly sell my jdm y1 w/lsd for the price of the core charge if not more.
How does that sound? Any other ideas of what I can fab up. Any heavyly custom setup ideas?
For the record i have a 88-91 jdm y1 and a 90-91 ys1 ls tranny laying around for parts ect. its 91 integra (short splines, cable tranny)

I'd say go with Gearspeed.........and find out if they can rebuild your Y1.......
I'm sure they can get whatever is needed to rebuild it, as they are already going to make it strong as hell.......If you don't feel like messing with the Y1, pay the extra $500 and get the whole package......At least if you use your Y1, you don't have to buy an LSD, which would save you even more dough........

the ys1 is out of the question
gearspeed told me that they can make gears or order me gears that are at least close to what my Y1 was.
i figure if its 2700 without a core, ill just let them build me a new y1 with similar gear ratios and then sell the OEM oh so rare y1 lsd tranny i have.
im not worried about saving cash on the lsd; i was told oem lsd doesnt hold past 225+whp. it sounds like horse **** to me but a quaife lsd and stock oem lsd are TWO complete different types of lsd from what ive been told/read
i think im just going to beat the **** out of the y1 for now and then when the time comes fork out the 2700 and hope either 1) gear speed has a better deal 2) there are new and better 88-91 cable tranny upgrades.
I thought about it and how much is a new typer tranny (even thought it wouldnt work) arent they like 1700? 1000 more and your getting a better lsd plus carbon coated syncros... id say 2700 is a far deal from gear speed.

Hey Nick, gearspeed is looking pretty tasty to me, and if money isnt an issue then I would just go with one of their setups with the quaife. Sounds like they are built tough as hell.
I cant ever recall hearing about carbon coating, but I have heard of cryotreating gears. I will have to look into that.
There is always the option of running your current Y1 until you tear the **** out of it and then upgrade to the gearspeed tranny. I am definately going to be looking into them for the gearset that I need for the S1 chillin' in my garage...
Hit me up via email if there is anything else that I can help you with. Sounds like you're finally starting to figure this tranny dilemma out.
Glad that you are recovering well from that wreck as well
