I think both lincoln and miller sell quality equipment. Just dont go for the models home depot sells.

They're overpriced for what you get.
I'll ask my welder what he would recommend in your price range. I know the 135 is what he uses for 110V Mig and I've also used it for both MIG and Flux core welding and it works real nice.

I was in the same position you were in a while ago, I looked around and was gonna buy either the craftsman one that has gas capabilities or hobart handler 125, they are both around 300. Well my friend contacted me and told me he was selling his lincoln electric weld pack 100 for a great deal. One thing that really stood out about this machine was it was about the same cost as the hobart and craftsman welders but this one could weld up to 1/4 inch of steel where the hobart and craftsman could not.
Look into the lincoln electric weld pack 100.

Thanks...a huge Question I have is the gas/ no gas?
Whats the deal? For doing mostly exhaust work, maybe a few brackets and what not, should I fool with the gas?
If so, why?
Thanks....

For 110V machines, you really can't beat the Hobart Handlers. They are good machines and at a nice cost. If you go with a cheaper brand, you will give up quality, reliability, and availability of parts and consumables. If you go with the miller equivalent, you will only pay more money and get the same thing in another color.
However, with higher powered machines, I'd have to reccomend Miller.
I'd be scared of machines at Lowe's and Home Depot. I believe they make cheap versions of machines just to get them into a price range that the stores want.
For exhaust work and auto body work, I'd reccomend flux cored wire with no gas. Solid wire with gas will give a better weld, but it's really not necessary and will cost more. You may want to get a machine that is capable of using gas, so you can use it in the future if you want.

If you think at some point you may be doing more serious stuff, get a mig. Even if you dont use gas, you can reverse the polarity and throw flux core in the mig to do gasless.
Gasless does sound fine for that work though although people will bust your ***** for the way fluxcore welds look.

Yep, it can handle up to 1/4 inch of steel. And look around because you can find it for cheaper, I think I picked mine up for 250.
